The U.S. election process, in a nutshell

Electoral system  It's a campaign for the record books. First, a neck-and-neck race for the Democratic nomination will be won by either the first African-American nominee or the first female nominee of a major party. That winner will go up against the oldest person ever to vie for an initial term in the White House.

For the first time in decades, voters of all stripes are actually paying attention. But just how does the whole U.S. political system work, anyway?
