In Firefox, if I had that problem I would try 'view image' from the context menu (right click) and then copy or if that failed, 'save image' and then import in office.

It seems likely that the screen has been warped. Is the 'artifact' there at all times? Try a command prompt w/ large window and change the back ground colors to see if the 'artifact' is visible.
I had it in my head that the upgrade offer was to include xp. Do I remember wrong or was that just a rumor??
