You could add a USB3.0 add-on card, like one of these, and then get an external enclosure or docking station, like one of these, and use a SATA drive of your choice. 5 times the speed of USB2.0!
You can also go to this page on Western Digital's website and download their "Data Lifeguard Diagnostics" program to test the drive. You also might want to download the Acronis True Image WD edition...
