Association of .reg file?

Obtained a .reg file from online application provider to integrate with MS Office apps. When I right-click on it and choose "merge," it opens in Notepad. Is this normal, that is, has it also merged into the registry AND opened Notepad? Or did the associations get dinged and it's only opening Notepad? I ask because SOME of the keys denominated in the .reg file appear to have been changed, but the integration does not appear to have worked. What should the association be for .reg files?

Open Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types.
Scroll down to REG FIles, highlight it and click change.
Change to Registry Editor, The click Advanced.
Select either edit, merge or print, then check "set as default."
OK out.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
Today it is called golf!

Try the following:
- Start Windows Explorer.
- Select Tools | Folder Options...
- Activate the File Types tab.
- Select the REG extension in the list.
- Click Advanced (this assumes Windows 2000, XP or later)
- Select Merge in the list of actions.
- Click Edit...

The application to be started should be

regedit.exe "%1"

The check box "Use DDE" should be ticked, the Application box should contain regedit and the Subject box should contain System.
