    Referencing a Column in a listbox (2003)

I am trying to set the default of a control on a form to the hidden column on a listbox on another form . Access keeps on changing the value in the properties to "=[Forms]![frmMAin]![list](1)". which does not work. What am i doing wrong here? I cannot get rid of the brackets around column
    Thanks

    Don
