    Keyboard Failure

A friend called me yesterday and said his keyboard and sound card had stopped working. His PC is a Gateway XP Home desktop with a multimedia keyboard. I went over this morning to take a look. Couldn't navigate to the Gateway website without the keyboard, so I drove home and checked on his model. There was an audio driver package which I downloaded and took back to his house. After installing it, the sound card started working. No joy on the keyboard, however. The "special" keys (Go to Internet Explorer, Go to Outlook, etc.) work, but none of the standard ones. Device Manager shows no problems with anything. Tried a different PS/2 keyboard, no luck. Bought a USB adapter, Windows spotted the keyboard on Startup and said it was installing the USB drivers, but still the keyboard wouldn't work (or the second one, when used in a USB port). This has me completely stumped. Help!

    John,
Check this link to the Gateway site for installing their keyboard and drivers from the recovery CD and it also has a troubleshooting link further down on the page.

Unfortunately they don't have a Recovery CD for this PC, and when I looked at the Gateway site earlier today, there was no keyboard driver listed for their model.

    Re: Keyboard Failure

    What model is it?
Might be a combined keyboard and mouse driver set.
See if you can find the System model and the keyboard model numbers.

Did you check any of the troubleshooting hintslinks on that page? ( down by the bottom of the page )

    Gateway 504GR

I don't remember seeing anything like that when I checked the Gateway site, but I'll look again. Device Manager says everything is OK with the mouse and keyboard drivers, though.

    >> See if you can find the System model and the keyboard model numbers. <<

Would the System model be something else other than 504GR? And I don't think the keyboard has any kind of label, but I'll look.

Yep, tried all the "hardware" ideas. No Gateway Restore CD available to try the device driver steps.

    Re: Keyboard Failure

    John,
At this SITE there is the start of a list for various multi- function keyboard drivers, depending on the serialmodel number of the keyboard. ( down at the bottom of the page )

Also it lists how to install the drivers and other pertinent info for each keyboard. The list continues on following pages, so try to get some type of number from the keyboard.

Got the driver file, but no joy. Now convinced the keyboard controller has failed. Never seen this before, but I assume this means new mobo or scrap the PC.
