    E-mail Address backups (MSO 2003)

I am trying to find a way to back up my Outlook settings and e-mail addresses -- NOT the whole bulk of the PST file.

From this board, I was led to The Outlook Backup Genie:

    http://www.genie-soft.com/download/GBMHomeV7_setup.exe

    Here's the thing:

When I set up my Xp, I name all my Outlook EXPRESS e-mail addresses with numbers -- like "1 Chuck Billow" -- so I can sort them the way I want, since OE sorts alphanumerically and won't let you deviate.

THEN, when I import these to Outlook, I remover the numbers and place them in whatever order I want.

NOW: when I just ran a backup (via Genie) of my e-mail addresses for test purposes, it created two registry entries. One is numbered names, just like in my Outlook Express, the other is hex or decimal settings.

If I restore my Outlook settings, are these two entries combined to make the names I actually see in Outlook?

I understand that I might have asked the software people themselves, but I want an Outlook answer, NOT a Genie answer, and I figured there was and is no better group than this to come to for help -- surprise, surprise!

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Yea, that works...

How do you back up all your internet e-mail addresses?

If you mean the account settings, I print out screen shot of each account and it settings, as I trust NO account setting program to get all if the required information. I also save the screen shot image to disk.

    Dave:

    Now see there... you're just a party-pooper...

Heck, I'd be more confident of those backups than experience has taught me to be of the actual PST file backups...

It came up as a "wonder how you WOULD do that?"... Because with all the backup stuff out there, it just seemed to be the thing that was not readily apparent...

And then when I looked, and saw that the internet accounts seemed to match the Outlook Express details better than the Outlook's... THEN I got to really wondering why and how...

It also seems that, just like the rules, Office 2003 made some changes that made backups and restoration a lot more problematic.

If I remember right, the account settings are NOT in the PST file but in the registry.

E-mail profiles are listed in the Windows Registry as subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfiles.

    Hans:

So nowhere in those does it look like what displays, so there is obviously some type of correlation between the "parts" of that key, yes?

But if exporting that key would retain all the info (in case...) that's fine by me.

    Thanks,
    Chuck

Much of the information is stored in binary form, so it's not directly human-readable. But it's there...

Re: E-mail Address backups (MSO 2003)

    hans:

Guess what: I just used the reg entry to restore the email addresses to Outlook (HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfiles).

It restored them in the Tools/Email Accounts listing; But in the Tools/ Send/Receive pane, none are showing up at all.

I did back up my registry just before merging the entry, so it ain't the end of the world, but is there a piece somewhere that I missed that would finish this process up?

Re: E-mail Address backups (MSO 2003)

I'm confused about what exactly you're trying to do. E-mail profiles and e-mail addresses are not the same thing. E-mail addresses are stored in contacts folders in your .pst file. E-mail profiles (the identities you use to log into Outlook) are stored in the registry.

Re: E-mail Address backups (MSO 2003)

    Hans:

I had to re-install my Office (2003) files.

I can copy over the pst file, and the items in the AppData/Microsoft/Outlook folder. That brings back the rules, menus, etc., but not the email addresses (used for pop and smtp ops), not the Contacts folder, which is in the PST file.

So, when I had the chance, I exported out the reg entry mentioned, as I had understood that that entry contains all the email address info (passwords, display, pop/smtp data etc.).

Well, all that info DID "come back" when I merged that entry -- except as mentioned, the actual menu items for each email address.

Re: E-mail Address backups (MSO 2003)

Reinstalling Office 2003 shouldn't do anything with your e-mail profiles, so I don't understand why you'd need to restore them. But anyway, can you see the information in the Mail control panel, or if you select Tools | E-mail accounts... and click "View or change existing e-mail accounts", then click Next?

I had restored my system from a pre-Office install image.

Yes, I can see the email accounts fine from either the mail control or from the Tools / Email... they're just not in the Send/Receive menu/
