Shrink To Fit For Table Cell (Word 2000)

Working with a mail merge in Word 2000 and several times the text for a particular cell is too large and wraps below what is visible (the cell sizes must remain constant). I've been pulling may hair out looking for the equivalent of shrink to fit in Excel or Publisher's Autofit which automatically adjusts the font size so that all of the text fits within the predefined boundaries of the table cell. This would seem like a fairly straight forward requirement but I can't for the life of me find a way to do it. Thanks a million for any help!

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Word does have something like that, but it doesn't work very well:
    - Select the cell or cells you want to change.
    - Select Table | Table Properties...
    - Activate the Cell tab of the Table Properties dialog.
    - Click Options...
    - Tick the "Fit text" check box.
    - OK your way out.
The effect is that Word tries to fit each paragraph on a single line; im my experience, however, it is frequently resized incorrectly, so that the text is truncated. You're probably better off making the cells large enough to accomodate the longest text without resizing it, or making the text shorter...

Re: Shrink To Fit For Table Cell (Word 2000)

    Hi Hans:

Thanks so much for your quick response, yes I had taken a look at the Fit Text option but you're right, what a mess, it stretches whatever text you enter to fit across the cell if it's not wide enough and then condenses all the text on ONE line to the point where it's not even readable. I wonder if anybody has found a use for this...

I was wondering if there might be a VB add-in or something like that out there that might do the trick (I also looked at the field formatting switches but couldn't find anything there either)...

It's a SNAP in Publisher... Autofit behaves EXACTLY as we would want, the overall font size of the text just gets smaller across all of the mutli-lines until it fits within the boundaries of the cell... if any text is subsequently added, the text continues to be reduced in font size automatically as text is being entered to keep the overall size within the cell... It's BEAUTIFUL... now if only there was something in Word that would do the same...

Thanks again for your help though Hans!

    I haven't seen a macro or add-in to do what you want, but perhaps someone else has... <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>
