Word Settings via Tools Options menu (Word 2000 SP2)

    Is there any quick and easy way to uncheck the
    "Allow Background Saves" option on the SAVE tab in Word 2000 on Nt4 SP6a and Windows 98 SE PCs. I know that applying an OPS with this unchecked will do it, however all I want to change it this one setting and not all the PCs I need to apply this change to have the same Word settings. Is there a registry setting or something similar?

    All help much appreciated.

    Regards

    John

    If you are on a network and are trying to control the setting for all PC's, it can be managed through policy settings which are handled at the server level (I think) and implemented via a script (this part I'm not expert at but your network administrator should know about this).

    I believe the Office Resource Kit has the policy editing tool, a spreadsheet with the options that can be managed through policy and policy templates for all of the Office settings.

    This is how we manage settings throughout our office.

    I don't think you can manage this setting through the registry directly because it's part of the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordDat a key and contains a lot of other values as well.

    Thank you for your response. Unfortunately due to our technical enviroment policies is not an option, I should have mentioned this!

    Hi John,

    Here is a macro that might be useful to you:

Sub RemoveBackgroundSave()
    System.PrivateProfileString _
    ("", "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft" _
    & "Office9.0WordOptions", "BackgroundSave") = "0"
    End Sub

    Hi Schatzie,

    Actually the option for "Allow background saves" is stored at:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordOpt ions

    Here is an article that lists the primary items the Data keys stores if interested:

    Thank you for this.

    It updates the registry fine, however when I start Word the option remains checked. Any further thoughts?

    Hi John,

    ! Yep it changes the Registry, however when you exit Word the Registry is updated with the current settings!

    Sorry! I wrote/ran the macro, refreshed the Registry and saw the update. I forgot that Word updates the Registry upon exiting.

    Here is an another macro that will do what you want. This one removed the tick in Tools/Options instead of writing to the Registry. That way when you exit Word the value will be updated accordingly.

Sub RemoveBackgroundSave()
    With Options
    .BackgroundSave = False
    End With
    End Sub

    Cheers!

    Hey that's what we're all here for - to learn and eat up all of the knowledge we can!

    (Well...that's what I'm here for anyway!)
