PREVIEW suspect after Symbols font (Word97/SR2 Win95 original)

    (Word97/SR2 Win95 original)

Type some text in a new document: "Your hair looks GREAT!".

    Select the entire document (Ctrl-A).

Change the font to Symbol (Format, Font, Symbol). On my system I obtain what appear to be Greek letters.

Exit the dialogue, inspect the text.

With the (Greek letter - symbol) text still selected, choose Format, Font, and "Swiss911 XCm BT" or similar.

Note that the preview box shows rectangular lozenges.

Choose almost any other font.Observe the pretty lozenges!

What's the conclusion? Don't rely on the preview box when you're switching amongst fonts, especially Symbol.

    Hi Chris,

See this article for the reason and a macro that will convert the boxes back to a non-symbol font:
Symbol Characters Change to Box Characters

Also note that the file may need to be saved prior applying the non-symbol font if working through your example or the results will not be as you describe.

BAM, thanks for this lead. I had nopt got as far as seeing box characters in my text - only in the Preview box of the Fonts dialogue.

In fact, choosing "OK" gave me the desired appearance in the document - only the preview was screwed up.

I figure that if I were browsing fonts to locate a suitable example, the Preview box could fool me into thinking that there wern't an awful lot that suited (by showing me boxes), whereas most of them make sense in the document.

    Hi Chris,

I believe the problem you would've ran into is if you saved the document. In this situation, changing to a non-symbol font will still result in boxes, or ANSI 63, which is a ? I take this to mean "I don't know what this character is".

In that case you would need the macro to convert them back again. Luckily the Unicode value is still present so the macro does the job. I ran into this when converting some old WP docs for a client and was happy to find a resolution.
