    Reminder Scheduling Utility

I have been using the AutoTask scheduler to run a few scheduled activities and to display a lot of reminder messages to keep me from forgetting to do thngs. I'm switching to a new PC with Windows Vista and AutoTask will no longer work and there is no AutoTask - Vista solution in the near future. So, I'm looking for some other program/utility that I can use to display reminder messages. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks, Bill

Will Vista's built-in Task Scheduler not do what you require?

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

I didn't realize that it could display a message! I've tried entering a couple of reminders after reading your message and that part seems to be OK. However, my test reminder was supposed to trigger 2 minutes ago and it hasn't popped up yet. I'll have to check and see if I have it set up correctly.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Don't know if this will apply to you or not, but if I am correct, you can only schedule a task if you log in to your account with a PASSWORD. I believe this was the same in XP.

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

I don't know if that is true or not but I do log in with a password. My scheduled reminder messages are now working. My test didn't work initially because I had it set up to run no matter who is logged in and then I found a statement that message displays would not work unless it was set to work only if I am logged it. I'm thinking of adding a User account that my grandchildren can use. If I do that I'll have to check on what happens to my messages if a message is triggered when they are logged in.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

I have used Active Desktop Calendar (Xemico) for several years, and it works well under Vista. The program combines many functions including pop-up reminders, notes and tasks and calendar.
I have also been able to transfer 3D Calendar (which I have used for many years) to Vista- also provides timed pop-up reminders. This program requires "run as administrator."
These two programs are so much part of my life that I make the awful mistake of forgetting to use an old-fashioned written diary -the only method which will survive a computer disaster!

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

That is great information! You apparently use both of those products and that puzzles me a little. What does the 3D one do that the other, free one, does not? Does the Active Desktop Calendar provide recurring reminders that pop up on the screen at the dates and times you specify? I can't tell for sure from their web site, so maybe that is the significant difference. I don't really need a calendar where I can record appointments, etc., I still do that on paper. But I do need something that will remind me that today is the recycle pickup day or I have a meeting in 15 minutes, and that kind of thing.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you looked at Windows Vista: Features Explained: Windows Calendar? It is builtin and easy to use.

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

    Joe,

I hadn't realized there was a Windows Calendar, in spite of the fact that it right there on the Start menu! <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> It looks like it will probably serve my needs just fine. I'll start using it and see how it goes. I have always been aware that Outlook has a calendar feature but I don't use Outlook and didn't realize there was one available right in Windows.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

It really is a case of overkill!
I have used 3D Calendar for years- and over that time have incorporated birthday and anniversary reminders which faithfully alert me each year, with advance warning I can set in the program (days, weeks etc). I also use it for daily reminders ( e.g. meetings, pay the cleaner etc). It has become an old friend and am loathe to say farewell! It met the challenge of being to operate on a Vista machine. Sentiment dictates that I keep using the program which has become a faithful and reliable friend.
I am a more recent user of ADC, which can be set to remind me with pop-ups which can appear on the desktop at intervals from 1 minute to years, with or without a sound. ADC incorporates many more sophisticated functions, and I recommend a trial.
    Both are shareware programs.

    Re: Reminder Scheduling Utility

I can see why you would continue to use both programs. Now that I've been reminded that Windows has a Calendar, I'm going to use that for a while and see if is sufficient for what I want to do. I'll keep a record of both your programs for future reference.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Indeed they are. My apologies for the omission.
