Vlookup (Excel 2000)

Excel's Vlookup function works really well with numbers but what about text charaters? For example, if I give out letter grades to my students, such as A, A+, A-, B, B+, B-, etc, converting the grades back to numbers (A=90, A+=95, A=85, ...) this will be a problem even I sort the list. Anyone has some ideas about solving this?
    Thanks

From your description, I don't see what the problem is. Something like this formula works for me:

=VLOOKUP("A",A1:B9,2,FALSE)

I have attached a simple Excel file for your review. You should then understand what I mean. The looked up result is incorrect or not what I want.

Your VLOOKUP had two problems. First, it did not specify the fourth parameter as FALSE to get an exact lookup. Second, the table had a blank after the letter grades without a plus sign, and the cell containing the letter to look up did not. I have attached a workbook that works.

Thanks very much. Your help is much appreciated. I never thought of those areas that you mentioned.
