Styles with heading numbers plus a border (Word 20

    Dear Loungers,

Has anyone knowledge of this: my numbered headings work beautifully. But the client wants Heading 1 to have a border - a maroon underline. However when I apply this the numbering on single line headings disappears, Subsequent Heading 1 lines with multiple lines are OK so numbering is honoured but somehow not shownExample attached see the third heading and compare with first two, if you add a soft line break numbering appears.

    Any ideas?

    thank you......................... liz

The screenshot below shows what I see in Word 2003 SP2. Is is different for you?

    Hans,

Yes it's the same (sorry typed Word 2003 for the version without looking at the results so looks like word 2!)

So the first title that you see displays no numbering, although it is heading 1, the second is fine with numbering. If you so SHIFT+ENTER in the middle of the first of these low and behlod the numbering will show. I haven't come across this before and can't think what I might have done to "make" this happen. I have tried sompletly new document and defining the headings from scratch but no good (although I am trying again because the design I almost wanted was showing in the gallery and I chose it to customise).

Try the following (numbers refer to the screenshots below):
    - Click in a Heading 1 paragraph.
    - Select Format | Bullets and Numbering...
    - Click Reset and confirm (1)
    - Select the 1 Heading 1, 1.1 Heading 2 etc. numbering style.
    - Click Customize... (2)
    - Work your way down the levels and add a point after the numbering; if desired also adjust the indents.
    - When done, click OK. The numbering should now be OK.
    - If you go back to Format | Bullets and Numbering it should look like (3)

I'll attach the modified doc in the next reply.

Re: Styles with heading numbers plus a border (Wor

    Hans,

I have just got back to this. I have done exactly what you suggested, and other similar combinations but no luck. it seens to be to do with the underline, if I remove it everything is perfect. I think it is a combination of the underline and the fact that the numbers are in the margin (as opposed to the body) I have defined indents as zero plus the number id right aligned. I think it's a bug? Your document does allow the underline and the number but the number is in the body not the margin.

Is there anything else I can try?

    Thank you................ liz

It appears to be a bug in Word - the combination of numbers outside the margin and a paragraph border doesn't work correctly. I don't think you're going to solve this, so you'll have to give up one of the requirements (or make all headings more than one line long). Sorry.
