Removing unwanted cell date formats (XP SP3)

Although "everything" is set to UK date format, it appears in Excel that dates are defaulting to the US mm/dd/yyy format. I am tempted to think that this is because of the top Date cell format shown on the graphic, which I can't find any way of removing.

Is this diagnosis correct? Surely you don't have to format cells with a UK date format.in a New spreadsheet?

    Thanks!

    But surely 14/03/2001 is a UK date, not a US date? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

True! It helps if I do the screen dump on the correct PC!

That's strange, especially since the formats below it do conform to UK usage. I found one newsgroup thread mentioning the same problem in Excel 97; there was no solution, only the workaround to use a custom date format. I guess you'll have to live with it (reinstalling the PC without any guarantee that it will help seems too drastic).

(And no, there is no way to delete any of the "built-in" formats.)

OK, thanks, Hans - I will tell the hapless user to format the cells in the UK date format! (I don't think I can get a new PC for this reason alone...!)

I can reproduce those settings if you set the Date format in regional settings to MM/dd/yyyy (with the Locale on the General tab still set to UK) and then change the Locale in the workbook to English (UK). Have you double checked the Date tab settings on the PC, not just the default locale?
