Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Thanks Jeff,

Just downloaded and ran v1.69 Build 630. When revealing the results of two areas, 1) Licenses and 2) Secrets, it crashed. I have sent the author a note with snapshots of the error messages. This is under Windows XP Pro SP2 and all updates.

My previous version, 1.64 Build 622 runs without any hitches.

I'll post a note when I hear back from the author.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Without comparing our two setups, Bob, there's no tellin' but FWIW I hadn't tried those two this morning. I just ran them without a problem as well as a few more that I had not done this morning.

(PS Oooh, that "Secrets" is one I've never bothered with. That's a good one!)

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

I just received a "debug" version of 1.69 from the author and it ran OK.

I sent him the results of the debug log file. However, since it ran OK, I'm not too sure what it might tell him.

I reran the original download and it continues to crash.

Perhaps I should download a fresh copy and see what happens.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Hope you'll let us know if there's any further development, Bob.

I just wanted to make an additional comment here about the wealth of information in SIW! I've had the thing onboard ever since the first time I saw it mentioned in The Lounge, ever so long ago. But, I don't think I've ever "cruised" through it as much as I have today, in light of your concern. I went into many more of the sections than I ever have before and that program has got to get a gold star for providing helpful information - everywhere! Loungers would be well advised to keep it handy. And finally, given the quick response you got, that's an even bigger "plus" for the author.

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Al,

In addition to the "Secrets" feature, another one that I have had an occasion to use is "Eureka", which displays passwords in dialog boxes where there are only asterisks (*********). I've found this extremely valuable when setting up someone's dialup connection or updated a program where a password was required but they couldn't remember what it was. Very handy indeed.

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

OK, the glitch has been corrected. The author has been releasing test versions and I have been testing them. There is now a newer build which corrects the problems I have been having. I reported the problem at 12:23 this afternoon and after an exchange of 16 e-mails with several test copies later, the problem is gone.

I have to say, the author, Gabriel Topala is very responsive to support requests. Because of that, I intend to make a donation for the free version. It is well worth it.

The current version is still 1.69 but becomes Build 631, found at the same location as indicated in your previous message.

Cheers, Bob

Bob

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Doggone, that was a hard one to find, Jeff ( ) (Command line, Tools). I don't know how it works, but I'll have to wait until I come across a use for it, since I've never used the modem in this PC. I tried a couple of web sites I use that require ID and password login, but inside Fx, Eureka doesn't seem to work. Now that I know where it is, it'll be a good one to watch. Thanks...

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Tried out Eureka! and it was able to display my various e-mail account passwords. Sure will be handy as I get ready to upgrade. A real nifty feature !!!

Dunno, Al..... when I open SIW, "Eureka" is the first item in the dropdown menu under "Tools" (Menubar)

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

Oh, no doubt, Jeff. Unfortunately, I was too dumb to be looking on the command line. I was searching UP and DOWN in the left vertical pane for a "category" similar to the secrets item. Anyway, I found it...

SIW (System Information for Windows) update

System Information for Windows
Everything you want to know about your computer.

SIW has been updated to version 1.69 today. For those who are not familiar with SIW, it is a , standalone (no installation required) utility that gathers together just about anything you need to know about your computer, e.g., hardware, installed software and much, much more.

SIW is compatible with just about every flavor of Windows out there.

Read more and download here: System Information for Windows.

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

After reading these posts I decided to install the program. I understand that there is no installation file available on the hard disc, but I can't figure out how to bring it up to use again, once it's closed after the first install. There is no shortcut that I can find and I need you or some other poster to tell me how to see the information it provides again.

Thanks in advance.

Re: SIW (System Information for Windows) update

You can do this routine if you like:

1) Move the "siw.exe" file to "C:Program FilesSIW (create this new folder)

2) Right-click on the "siw.exe" file and choose, 'Create Shortcut". Then move that shortcut to wherever you would like to keep it, e.g., Start Menu, Quick Launch Bar, etc.

3) DONE!
