Open Office documents outside IE (XP Office 2003)

Hi. Can anyone tell me how you can open Office documents on a link on a page in IE in the correct application and not within the browser window? That is, see a link to, say, an Excel spreadsheet, click on it and it opens in Excel itself and not an Excel-like window within IE.

The primary reason for asking this is because we have a blind user who finds that if the Office document opens in IE, his voice-reader software (which works via scripting) cannot interpret the document, whereas if it opened in the correct app, it will. At the moment he has to save the document from IE, and then re-open it in the correct program ; a right royal pain.

If anyone knows how we can fix this, I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks.

Start Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
    Select Tools | Folder Options...
    Activate the File Types tab.
    Select an extension, e.g. XLS.
    Click Advanced.
Clear the check box "Browse in same window".
    Click OK.
Repeat for other extensions such as DOC.

Thanks, Hans. Would you believe that I had literally just stumbled across the KB item (162059) stating that very same thing as your reply arrived? The KB item also details a Registry change procedure that does the same thing but is much more complex and prone to error. Interestingly enough, PDF files are not nearly as much trouble. There is an option in the Adobe Reader preferences to have or have not pdf files open in a browser; deselect it and all pdf files automatically open directly in the reader. Would that Microsoft could make things that simple.......

    Thanks again. It's much appreciated.
