How to Create Groups (Vista Home Premium)

I am learning to use Windows Vista! In Windows Mail I want to create some address groups in the Contacts list. A couple of group folders were created when I transferred my stuff from Outlook Express but, like someone mentioned in another thread, the members of the groups were put in the main list, not in the group list! I've just finished moving everyone to the correct group and now I want to create another group. I've tried everything I can think of and I've looked in the Help system. Help says the following:
    ------
    Click to open Windows Contacts..

On the toolbar, click New Contact Group, type a name in the Group Name box, and then fill in the boxes on the Contact Group tab and Contact Group Details tab. You don't have to fill in all the boxes; just type as much information as you want about the new contact group you are creating.
    ------
I don't have anything I would call a toolbar but I do have a row of buttons/menus that consists of Organize, Views, Burn. There is no "New Contact Group" item in those menus either. Where do I find a toolbar that contains a Create Contact Group item?

    Thanks,
    Bill

I'd recommend you install Windows Live Mail Beta which is the follow on product to Windows Mail. In it when you click on the Contacts 'button' on the left you see a 'Create New Groups' in the left of the Contacts window.

    Joe,

I saw that suggestion in another thread and looked up that web page. I'm not sure I want the stuff that is described there! Most of the advantages listed there are either things I have no use for or they sound like Microsoft is taking more control away from me. I think I'll work on trying to figure out how to create the groups I want in Windows Mail before taking that step.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

It's not in Windows Mail itself. Click the Start button in the Windows taskbar, then select All Programs | Windows Contacts.

OK Hans, your picture explains my problem. My Contacts window has only three of those buttons across the top, as you can see in my attached picture. I wonder where the others went and how to get them back?

    Thanks,
    Bill

That looks like an Explorer toolbar instead of the Contacts toolbar.

I don't have Vista, so I cannot assist further, I hope that someone else can.

I don't understand what parts of Windows Live Mail are taking control away from you. But it is your call. I agree with Hans that the image you posted looks like Windows Explorer. Are you sure you are starting the Windows Contacts application from the start menu?

    Joe,

I guess the word "live" scares me to start with! I don't know what it implies but it sounds like more online involvement. It is things like the following that sound suspicious to me:

Get powerful virus scanning on all of your Hotmail messages
Enjoy increased protection from phishing scams, across all your e-mail accounts
    Block suspicious messages

Re: How to Create Groups (Vista Home Premium)

I forgot your second point. Yes, I've tried opening the Contacts window from the start menu and from Windows Mail and from an explorer window and it looks the same in each case. A while back I did click the button in a windows explorer properties dialog that said to make all folders of that type the same. I did that with the hope that it would change all the folders to the Details view instead of the view that seems to be the default when Vista arrives. I'm not sure that helped. Earlier than that I had already changed the Contacts window to Details view.

Ooops! I just opened the Contacts folder again and checked its properties and found that the template type on the Customize tab was set to Document. I changed that to Contacts and it corrected the problem. Maybe that change was caused by my clicking the button I mentioned above. Anyway, I seem to be back in business.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I'm glad you got your contact issue worked out. I don't want to leave some micsonceptions about Windows Live Mail. 'Live' just means it is part of the Windows Live suite of software that Microsoft has been developing and releasing ove the last year or so. You are not forced to use Hotmail. The 'bad' messages you talked about are just flagged as junk and put in your junk folder. You can still review them and mark as not spam if needed. See Windows Live Mail Beta FAQ for more information.

Re: How to Create Groups (Vista Home Premium)

Also, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, & Outlook 2007 all act the same as far as rules and spam filtering go. The spam filtering is always done before rules. That makes sense because the spam filter only checks e-mail in the inbox and if a rule moves a spam e-mail then the filter will not check it. If you don't like that you can turn the filter off and look for a third party spam filter that works the way you want.

Re: How to Create Groups (Vista Home Premium)

Thanks for the additional explanations, Joe. I'll have to read about Windows Live again but my impression when I read something about it earlier was that it was something I didn't need or want. I guess that is why the name Windows Live Mail didn't appeal to me. I did turn off the spam filtering earlier so my newsletters would go into the correct folder. Most of my spam filtering is on the web at my actual mailbox at FastMail.FM (a very good mail service, BTW, owned and run the way I think Woody would do it if he were the owner!).

    I appreciate your help.

Re: How to Create Groups (Vista Home Premium)

If you are OK with Windows Mail that is fine. If you don't want Windows Live Mail that is fine too. Leave it alone for now. I just pointed it out because Microsoft has stated it will be the replacement for both OE & Windows Mail when it comes out of beta.
