Themes and Desktop display corrupted (XP SP-2)

I got a call from a client just a bit ago, a most dreaded one I assure you, from a person who loves to change things on her PC. The problem now is that the "Themes" options as well as the text background on the Desktop icons isn't transparent.

1) Themes: There is only one option in the Themes dropdown menu: Windows XP. Windows Classic is missing along with everything else. When I make any changes, it will show "Windows XP -modified" as it should but if I try and use the "Save as" option to save any changes, it won't stick. It seems to me one or more default system files have been either corrupted or deleted. And, to make matters worse, she can't find her XP installation CD so I can't run "sfc /scannow" to try and replace these files.

2) Non-transparent Desktop icon text: I suspect this anomaly is directly related to #1. I've checked all the places where one normally would to enable the transparent background for the text and they are all set correctly.

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to proceed to correct the problem, especially #1.

Jeff,
Without that XP CD, she may be "up the creek" without a paddle.
Can't even do a Repair Reinstall.

I assume you checked to see if Themes Service is on automatic and is running?

Have her look again and again for the CD.

Re: Themes and Desktop display corrupted (XP SP-2)

Bob,

To be sure, in the past when I have had to go over there, I reminded her to be diligent in storing all her installation CD's, especially the XP CD, in a place which is easily accessed. When I left earlier this morning I impressed upon her that failure to find that CD could result in a disaster. Quite some time ago, I convinced her to purchase True Image Home 10 and an external HDD to do weekly backups. But unfortunately, she has not been faithful in doing the backups, even with the auto scheduler setup (she keeps the external USB drive powered off). So, the last backup is many months old.

The "Themes" service is definitely running else the "Windows XP" theme wouldn't work. I checked the C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes folder and the "msstyles" file and other relevant files for the Luna Theme are there.

So, if worse comes to worst, I am thinking I could use my personal XP Home installation CD with the "CD Key" that she installed XP with to do a Repair Installation, IF running sfc /scannow with my CD didn't resolve the problem.

Jeff,
You can't say you didn't try but the old saw, you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink, sure applies here.

I'm not sure if using her Key on your CD will work but I suppose it's worth a shot?
Now you can tell her to either find the original CD or face buying another new one.

I don't suppose she has System Restore running, huh?

See the "themes" sections at T Page - Windows XP from A to Z. First entry seems to be what you are observing.

Thanks Joe,

But.... the first one is the opposite of what the problem is, i.e., Windows XP (theme), aka: Luna is fine.... Windows Classic Theme is missing as well as any functionality to save modified themes, add themes, etc. However, Line 187 in that same section looks promising. It might worth a try before doing anything else.
