Copying DVDs (Win XP sp2)

I have about 4 gb worth of home movies transferred to VHS and now two DVDs. Media player is useless when trying to copy my own DVD to my 200gb second system HD. Copying the dvd in windows explorer proved futile as well as with all other methods. Any suggestions? Strange how it allows you to "rip" an audio cd but apparently has no provision for "ripping" a dvd.

I moved your post to the Software Forum because I don't think what you want is a problem Windows (per se) can handle. It looks to me like you need a third-party program to do the job and Googling yields lots of hits on the subject. I didn't explore far enough to see if there's any freebies out there, but here's just one example that claims to do what you want and it's not too expensive:

Magic DVD Ripper - rip DVD to hard drive or blank DVD

There's lots of software out there that will do this. Have a look at (for instance) OOKO Search: dvd copy.
