Vista and Desktop Search (Home Premium)

The latest Office Watch newsletter (OW# 12.20) has a section about a conflict between Vista's search system and other search programs like Google's Desktop Search. I have a new PC that is running Vista Home Premium. I am also using Google's Desktop Search and I have not noticed any conflict between them so far. Can anyone tell me what the nature of that conflict is?

Neither of the search features seem to operate as fast as I had thought they would, but maybe I was just being too optimistic. Is that the problem or are there other symptoms that I haven't noticed?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Bill,

Yes, I have read several of Woody's complaints about Vista's search and particularly Outlook's Instant Search and for the life of me I can't figure out what in the world he is commiserating about?? Sometimes I can't help but think that if he can't find something to complain about he exaggerates or makes something up so as to have something to write about. <img src=/S/RollEyes.gif border=0 alt=RollEyes width=19 height=19> On my system, the Windows Instant Search is instantaneous as is the search in Outlook. Both, IMHO, are incredible and I have no need to try a 3rd-party search addon. The "Instant Search" feature in Vista is one of several features which really makes me glad I upgraded from XP. Sorry to hear that you find the Search feature to be slower than you had expected.

    Jeff,

I just bought this Toshiba PC a couple of weeks ago and it came with the Google Desktop installed on it so I've left it there. There are situations where the Vista search responds instantaneously but other situations when it says the search may take a little and it does take some time. Maybe that is related to what is being indexed. I haven't changed the default settings for what is indexed.

I'll continue to use both for a while and see how it goes.

    Thanks,
    Bill

The conflict between the Instant Search & Google Desktop search comes when both are trying to index the same data. Depending on the implementation it will either slow down the indexing or cause data to not be indexed. If you frequently see the search take some time you should probably modify what is being indexed.

Thanks for the info, Joe. I'll keep an eye on it for a while and see what happens.
