Security Updates (SP2)

An email from Microsoft lists six security updates for July. When I go to Windows Update none of them are shown as available, only an update to IE7. I have checked my past history of updates and they do not appear there either. What is going on?

That does not seem to explain why none of them are available to me. I have Windows XP2 and Excel 2000, the latter being marked as critical.

It can have several causes, I guess. In the past it could happen that Windows Update (WU), Automatic Update (AU) and Microsoft Update (MU) did not have all the new updates at the same time, early after a release. But let's look at the updates ...

Now, you don't say in your subject what edition of XP you are running (it's possible to put at a Home or Pro in there for information, can be helpful).

Out of this batch of security updates; 3 critical, 2 important and 1 moderate, there is little for XP Home Edition (if one doesn't have certain applications). And even with Pro the MS07-041, "IIS 5.1", isn't installed by default.

Your Excel 2000 is affected true, but you will not find updates for that trough Windows Update. MU, on the other hand can handle both Windows and Office updates. But I think it starts with Office XP, don't remember. In that case use Office Update.

But we are really early in the update process, for the July updates. An example: MS table "Affected Software" at the Bulletin Summary Joe linked shows no Excel 2002 (i.e. the one in Office XP), but the corresponding bulletin MS07-036 clearly shows Excel 2002 as one of the affected.

That said, it only shows that not all information is correct this early moment.

As to your past history, I don't know if it's just a glitch at the moment (I do not use WU/MU myself, anymore).

So, Windows Update has never shown updates for Office, away goes Excel update; you probably don't have a server, away goes Windows Active Directory update; if you don't have .NET Framework installed away goes that update, that's the three critical.

MS Office Publisher update only affects 2007 MS Office System, and you seem to have Office 2000, and anyhow the Office Updates are at MU, AU or Office Update, not Windows Update. The IIS, as mentioned, doesn't affect Home Ed. and isn't default on Pro. That was the two important, away.

Well, the moderate one is for the Windows Vista firewall, and then we're in the wrong forum <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>, since you have Windows XP.

Doesn't leave much left, does it.
