Annoying 'convert from' dialog when opening .rtf (2003 sp 2)

    Hi everybody:

This is not really a programming question, but here goes:

For several years, I have been using Automation to send reports created in Access as rtf files (DoCmd.SendObject acSendReport,"rptErrLog",acFormatRTF,etc.) to my Outlook inbox so I know when code has finished running and can check for any errors. RTF files are set to be opened by Word on my computer. This has worked seamlessly until today.

The problem is that for the first time, this morning, when I open Outlook and double-click the rtf file attachment, Word pops up an annoying dialog box that asks me to confirm converting the file from rtf format. If I accept the default .rtf format and click OK, the file opens correctly. However, I do not like Word's annoying dialog box, as I have plenty of other things to do with my time than click their buttons.

Anyone know why this would be happening? We've tested it on other PCs here in the office, and the dialog box does not appear.

Thank you, in advance, for your help.

    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the General tab.
Clear the check box "Confirm conversion at Open".
    Click OK.

Keep in mind that the "Confirm conversion at Open" setting can be very useful, in particular when connecting to the data source for a mail merge. If "Confirm conversion at Open" is off, Word uses the default method, OLE DB. This method has its limitations, so in some cases it is necessary to choose a different method, such as ODBC for an Access data source. This is only possible if "Confirm conversion at Open" has been turned on.

Well, I didn't really think that Word needed to "convert" an rft file anyway - it used to just open it. Any other ideas?

RTF is not the native Word document format, so Word does have to convert an RTF file to open it.

Do you mean that clearing "Confirm conversion at Open" doesn't suppress the dialog?

No, I didn't mean that. It has solved my problem. I just thought you might know of a different approach.

    Thanks!

No, if you don't want the dialog, turning off the option is the only way.
