    Make sure that Design Mode is on. You toggle Design Mode with the first button on the Control Toolbox.
    Select the check box.
    Click the Properties button on the Control Toolbox. This is the second button, next to the Design Mode button.
    Edit the Caption property. This is the text displayed next to the check box.

    To define an action for the check box, you must determine which table you want to change color. If it is the first (or only) table in the document, use Tables(1) in the code below. If it is the third table (counting from the top), use Tables(3), etc.
    Double click it while still in design mode.
    This will create an event procedure for the button in the ThisDocument module.
    Make it look like this:

    Private Sub CheckBox1_Click()
    With ActiveDocument.Tables(1).Shading
    If Me.CheckBox1.Value Then
    .BackgroundPatternColor = wdColorLightGreen
    Else
    .BackgroundPatternColor = wdColorAutomatic
    End If
    End With
    End Sub

    This uses the name of the check box, not the caption. Don't forget to change Tables(1) if necessary.

    Do you want only the cell in the first row in a column to turn green, or the entire column? If the latter, you may want the check box to change color too.

    See the attached document. The code for CheckBox113 is

    Private Sub CheckBox113_Click()
    With ActiveDocument.Tables(1).Columns(2).Shading
    If Me.CheckBox113.Value Then
    .BackgroundPatternColor = wdColorBrightGreen
    Me.CheckBox113.BackColor = vbGreen
    Else
    .BackgroundPatternColor = wdColorAutomatic
    Me.CheckBox113.BackColor = vbWhite
    End If
    End With
    End Sub

    and similar for the others.
