    Problems modifying Windows 2000 ACLs

    First off I'm running Windows 2000 SP2, IE 5.5 SP1.

I have lost the ability to add users or groups to any ACLs in Windows 2000. I can modify or remove any existing permissions - I just can not add any.

Any time I click on Add through any ACL modification capable program(mmc,
explorer, etc.) the program crashes. Here is a sample event log. The mmc program crashed immediately after clicking on Add.

    Event Source: DrWatson

    etc.

There is also a problem in listing what groups a user is associated with. For example, if I use the Computer Management mmc and check what groups a user is a member of, the text is not listed - only the user icon is listed. Same thing if I check what users are members of what groups.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

FWIW, I have already tried reinstalling Windows 2000 which fixed the
problem temporarily but it has returned.

    Thanks.

I have noticed that 2k has the ability to corrupt the referenced page or memory addressing, even SID code. Due to Active Directory Schema the corruption is relicated all over.
I had to re-create New Forest to get rid of corruption in the older domain. <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>

    Nbokhari,

Thanks for your reply. You seem to be the only one I have run across that has experienced this or similar phenonenon.

Your reply has me confused. I'm not using Active Directory. This is a stand alone machine. I don't believe I stated that in my original post.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do short of reinstalling Windows?

2k is build on the concept of Active directory. I do not know what network configuration that you are running, or why would you create groups on a single machine. Are you on 2k WS or a 2k Server.
Every file, directory etc is treated as an object which has its own complete set or permissions. Did you set up the admin password during or after the installation?
    Much needs to be liiked at. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Re: Problems modifying Windows 2000 ACLs

I'm running Win2K Pro. I have the Admin account which I have renamed and a User group account which I use for "every day" work, surfing, etc. Also a Guest account which has also been renamed.

I don't have a NIC installed. I just use dial-up with a modem for Internet access.

Admin account was set up during installation.

Why did you "Admin account which I have renamed " ?
This is your safety net to run and control your machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Remaning the Admin account is standard procedure to prevent a hacker from using the default "Administrator" and guessing the password.
