Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

You can place .pst files wherever you want. The default location is

    Cocuments and Settings<username>Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

(this is for Windows XP, I assume it will be similar for Windows Vista), but you're free to store them elsewhere. The Local Settings and Application Data folders are hidden, so you'll only see them if you display hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer.

I wonder if the files you mention have been used recently - my .pst files change date each time I use them.

In recent versions of Outlook, the Contacts folder is used as address book; the Contacts folder is stored in the .pst file, not as a separate file.

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

is there a way to detect which pst file i'm using now?

i use the term address book generically. contact list is, yes, what i am concerned about. my question about linking or merging is still important to me.
do i hve to "disconnect" outlook to use another pst? (i assume i will need to do that)

(i NEVER use the "hide files" feature, but Vista is a sonofabitch for not keeping defaults. I despise the new search and windows explorer [equivalent] setup.)

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

You can check which files you are using now by selecting File | Data File Management...
It should list at least one file; you can make the column with the file name wider to see the complete path.
The item with 'Mail delivery location' in the Comment column is the one currently used to receive and send mail. Other items can be archive storage files.

You can open multiple .pst files (using File | Open | Outlook Data File), and you can move or copy items from one open .pst to another one.

John & Hans, why didn't this PST come out in my SEARCH ALL LOCATIONS for *pst?
This will add to my file folders, I now have an additional one in the convoluted HP/Users/Administrator/Apps, or whatever. I REALLY do not like these dozen-nested-deep folders

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

Right click the topmost level of the PST, Select Properties | Advanced. Or you can also see them via File | Data File Management. (2003 menus, I think Outlook 2002 menus are the same.)

Edit - in answer to your second question, you can use many PST files simultaneously in Outlook (I have 5), but only one must be your message delivery PST (excluding an Exchange environment, where your server mailbox is not a PST).

    Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

I upgraded a new computer to Vista, then moved my data. Outlook's mailbox & e-mail is showing info from about 5 years ago. Some questions--

    * Should one or all my PST folders be in a default location? They are scattered. Not sure if some are basically duplicates.
    * Can any PST folders be deleted or merged?
    * How do I access current adress book info? (I now have been receiving new mail for a couple months in with the 2003 mail.)

    Here are my files...
    PersonalFolders(1).pst, 4/21/2007 7:42 pm, 3,593 kb file location 1
    mailbox.pst, 4/19/2007, 11:00 pm, 28,969 kb root directory
    outlook.pst, 4/19/2007, 11:00 pm, 96 kb root directory
    outlook.pst, 5/1/2003, 9:39 pm, 96 kb file location 2
    mailbox.pst, 6/26/2002, 2:18 am, 28,969 kb file location 2
    outlook.pst ? ? ? ...usershp administratorappdatalocalmicrosoftoutlookoutlook

I wonder how/when these files are time stamped. They don't seem to correspond with any special events or shut downs or changes....just random dates. Like I see nonr for July 2007 even though my computer has shut down and Outlook has restarted.

One more thing, I'm having to type in my e-mail passwords manually upon each Outlook startup. The "Save this password in your password list" never "takes." Any fix for that?

    As always, thank you!

    Jim

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

How to merge files (if at all)?
Which one to use, the most recent mailbox.pst? or the most recent outlook.pst?

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

I'm using XP, so I have no idea how Vista's file search capabilities and menus work - I understand they are very different. In XP, using File Explorer, under the Advanced options of the Search dialog pane, you would need to check "search hidden files and folders", and "search subfolders" (sic).

You don't like nested folders? Microsoft's way of keeing you confused? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> When I first started using XP I trashed a bunch of files because i didn't understand the structure where by "My Documents" are 'magic' folders reflecting deeply nested "Documents and Settings" child folders.

There's an option in Search (for Windows XP, at least) to search hidden files and folders.

John, i took more than a genereration (40 yrs) for my Dad, born in the 20's, to get too confused about many aspects of cars (under the hood), to be able to tweak them like he once could. It took about a decade (1990-2000) for me to lose the ability...that was with the advent of DLL files and not being able to DELETE stuff I didn't recognize....yes, nested folders have a certain hands-off, who knows what's down that hall, feeling :-) Hmm, it could be Bill Gates or.....Steve Jobs.

There is no option, as far as I know, to merge complete .pst files, but you can drag items and folders from one .pst file to another one, as long as both are open in Outlook.
The one that is currently your mail delivery location is the obvious candidate to keep.

Re: Linking/Merging PSTs under Vista (2002 SR 3)

Hans, allow me to clarify. I want my CONTEMPORARY contact information that is apparently stored in another PST than 2002 one I am using. I am willing to re-enter ISP details if needed (it should have the same as what I now use, it should only be a couple months old).

How do I simply do that? Please remember, I'm looking for very simple questions (maybe not simple answers). Here, I will boil it down to what I'm looking for.

What type of PST file do I link to, for my recent contact and mail messages (2005, 06, 07)--is it
    1. Mailbox PST or
    2. Outlook PST?

    3. How do I disengage from my current file and acess the new one?

    Thanks much!

Hans and I are answering somewhat at cross-purposes (and my apologies to Hans for jumping in). After you review the answers so far, see what you are not clear on and post back.

off topic, i'm so sick of this vista interface, could someone remind me how to opt for "classic" (XP is fine) Explorer view?

Yes, there is a Classic interface, BUT, you will lose some of the ease in moving about.

Check out the options by "right clicking" the Start Button and selecting Properties and then the Start menu tab.

Then Right click the Desk top, and select Theme and settings, the on the theme area select Windows Classic.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
