    pseudo scroll bar (2003)

    Hi All,

With all the laptops I've owned, I've always bought and used an external mouse since I never really liked the touchpad.

Lately, I've gone back to using the laptop's touchpad because...well, just too lazy to connect the mouse.

I've gotten into a bad habit of keeping one finger hovering over the "left click" button. The button is so sensitive that the laptop thinks I've clicked when I've applied barely minimal pressure - of course unintended.

I've noticed that there are times when my finger is over (on?) the button and I'm scrolling on the pad that a small gray "scroll bar" appears on the screen where the mouse cursor is. It's about 0.5 inches high and pretty narrow. It has up/down arrows at top/bottom and a small bar in the middle. Although I'm scrolling, that small bar doesn't move, but it is suggestive of a scroll bar.

I've now gotten this in PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. There is no way for me to send a screen shot - as soon as I take my fingers off the touchpad, it's gone.

Any ideas of what this is and what function it serves?

    TIA
    Fred

Not a model I am familiar with, but most laptops seem to come with touchpad utilities - I would guess that is a Compaq/HP one. Possibly just there to indicate that you are on the scroll section of the touchpad?

Is this what you see? I found that I could get this sometimes on my ASUS laptop. But I could not work out any logic of when it appears.
(Irfanview takes screen capture with CTRL F11, so I could capture it b using four fingers at once.)
    Regards
    John

    John - that's it!

It seems to have something to do with scrolling. That's about the best I can figure.

    Thks.
