Can't connect to networked printers after reinstal (SP2)

After reinstalling XP Pro SP2 "in place" on a PC which would not boot correctly, I now find that I cannot connect to any of the networked printers, which are defined on a Windows Server 2003 box.

In Add Servers I select Network Printer, and type fileservername and am presented with a list of the four printer sharenames. Selecting any one of these and clicking on Next gives the message:
"Windows cannot connect to the printer, either the printer name was typed incorrectly <etc>"

All other PCs have no problem, so the problem clearly is on the 'reinstalled' PC./

I have Googled the message and haven't come up with anything useful. Any ideas for how to proceed, please?

Thanks

If you don't type anything but just press Next and let it search for the printers, can you install it then? (I assume you have turned off the firewall and enabled File/Print sharing)

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

Thanks, Rory.

I don't have any of the printers defined in Active Directory, so your suggestion can't be used.
I had already checked the Windows Firewall (off! But I agree, sometimes it sneakily turns itself on...), and there is no other software firewall.
File and Printer Sharing was on, so I uninstalled File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, rebooted, and reinstalled it, but no improvement.

I did see a suggestion to change the printer sharename on the server, then change it back, but I can't try that until early tomorrow morning!

On this particular PC, was Windows XP preinstalled before this repair/reinstallation/in-place upgrade?

Yes, it is a Dell Optiplex 320... I used the Recovery XP Pro SP2 CD, then applied a few outstanding fixes from Windows Update.

I should have said earlier that the PC has no trouble connecting to File shares on the server, just these printers. I haven't come across any other problems. I may find myself attacking the Registry unless someone comes up with a Brite Idea!

Are you sure you need them in AD? I'm positive we used to be able to do this in NT4.

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

I've had problems with
a) Not being logged on as an administrator
The printer name being too long, or containing spaces or not the (correct) share name (or something similar).

I'm afraid I can remember little else, including how I worked round it, but it may give you an idea or three.

Leif

When I do anything like this I am always logged on as a Domain Admin!

One of the printer sharenames is six characters long, without spaces. The other three have embedded spaces. None of the other PCs have any problems with this, and before the forced reinstall neither did this PC!

OK, just checking <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Have you tried manually entering in the computernameprintername (using the printer share name, which may not be the same as that listed when searching)?

A solution I found obliquely doing a Google, was
<hr>Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose: Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the computer nameprinter name <hr>
I've also known issues like this clear themselves up after a few hours, but don't ask me why. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

There is, or maybe should say was, a potential for loss of data when performing a repair/reinstallation/in-place upgrade under certain circumstances.

Don't know if that was before SP1 or SP2, or still can happen, but other odd thing can happen depending on what applications one had installed before the repair.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP mention this loss of data in links to:

"... then applied a few outstanding fixes ...", there are a few, yes. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after reinstal (SP2)

Out of curiosity, do your printers have static IPs assigned to them? Maybe your server has to "resolve" the names of the printers and re-populate them for the "all fixed up" PC?

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

Leif: thanks, I'll try that tomorrow.

Argus: the "few fixes" were literally that - the five or so which hadn't been applied the previous Wednesday from this month's "second Tuesday".

Skitterbug: yes, all the printers have fixed IPs (if you include an Ethernet printer server box which has just one parallel printer attached).

Somehow I feel that the significant fact is that none of the four previously-connected networked printers can now connect. I did find a NET USE LPT1 connection to one of the printers that comes in from my logon script, which apparently had worked. How relevant that is, I don't know...

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

Can you ping the printers IPs to see if you can at least reach them?

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

Leif: Yes, I tried that - it works, but the effect is that you are setting up a local printer on the PC, not connecting to a networked printer. I suppose if I get nowhere with the problem I'll just have to define all the networked printers as local printers directly on the PC. <grrrh>

Skitterbug: I can ping all the printer IP addresses, but I don't this that's relevant. It is the print server which needs to see the printers, not this PC.

Re: Can't connect to networked printers after rein

Something I've never understood, is that all printers I can print to from my PC - with the exception of a USB printer - are shown as connected to LPT1: (including a local printer).
