An Email From Acronis

Just a heads up for our loyal bunch of Acronis TrueImage Loungers. I just found an email from them asking a "loyal customer" to participate in a short, online survey. Yeah, sure, they're always "short" right?

I did, of course, give them my opinion of what I would like to see in a future version of TI: The ability to restore a backup to a new or replacement machine! But, the heads up for TI users is that it was obvious from the number of questions in the survey about it that the next thing on their agenda must be ONLINE backup! I got a bit tired of repeating my negative answer to the series of questions! Keep your eye on your email, registered users...

Hey Al,
I didn't get that email as of yet but maybe they are sending them alphabetically?
Haven't heard of any new Betas coming down the pike. They may be just scratching around?
Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

Re: An Email From Acronis

Al,

Thanks for the fore-warning. I too haven't received that survey request yet. But there is no way I could ever be convinced to store a backup of my system online. Unless I'm missing something here, if your PC died, how would you ever access the backup file? But even if such a techno-marvel possibility existed, I still would never entrust a "copy" of my entire system to anyone else, nor trust that the storage server was secure or 100% infallible. Thanks..... but NO thanks. I'll keep my backup images locally, thank you.

Re: An Email From Acronis

If you are willing to fork out for the TI Workstation AND Universal Restore, you acquire the ability to do a bare-metal restore to a new machine. I agree it would be much more acceptable to have that function available in the Home version for us ordinary folk who are home users.
Genie Backup Manager has just released an updated version which includes online backup (as did the previous version). GBM is a reliable backup program I have used for some years, long before I became a TI fan.

Re: An Email From Acronis

Al,
I received the same email - BUT - it went to my spam folder without a viewable header or subject line. The To, From, and subject were all blank but the properties of the email had addresses. Poorly formatted email in my opinion.
Now that I know what it may contain, I'll dig out the link and fill out the survey.
Later.

Re: An Email From Acronis

That's a strange one, Bob. Here's a crop of what the email looked like on my end. MailWasher flagged it as possible spam so I re-marked it as "friendly" - maybe that caused my Thunderbird to receive it OK. BTW, there was also a link to the survey online but I didn't post it here since I figured it probably identifies ME - which is not a problem between me and Acronis.

Re: An Email From Acronis

Except for the "paraphrasing" that's exactly what I told Acronis, Jeff! Since I had already answered another question that I backup to external USB drives, I also added comments that I want, no - I demand - to be able to see, touch and feel my backups and carry them away to a safe place in my own building!

Exactly why there is a need for back-ups to be held somewhere else! What happens if, heaven forbid, your building burns down?

Re: An Email From Acronis

Back when I was an avid reader of the now defunct Fred Langa newsletter, I used to laugh when he frequently told how he made his backups to CDs and kept them in the trunk of his car... At my last place of employment, we did our backups on tape and kept the tapes in a locked safe in the building. I won't bother telling (repeating) how many times a tape would "fail" to read.

Seriously, you make a good point, although if (God forbid!) my house were to burn down, I'd have a of a lot worse problems than worrying about a computer backup...

Re: An Email From Acronis

I haven't had any solicitation from Acronis to fill out a survey but I did recently receive an email from them. There must be a new version coming soon because of the following statement from their email - "Haven't upgraded to Acronis True Image 10 Home yet? Upgrade your old True Image today and you'll get the upcoming version 11 for free soon!"

If I do get the survey, I'll probably reflect the same feelings as you about backing up my computer online! No thanks!

Re: An Email From Acronis

My e-mail from Acronis had normal To:, From: and Subject: fields all filled in correctly. It was not identified as spam by my ISP's filters.

Thanks Paul,
I guess 'My' email was the only one that was squashed by Acronis' software - the luck of the draw.
OR maybe my email service is flaking out on me <sigh>..
Time will tell.

Hey Bob,
Don't feel bad. See my post above. I still didn't get anything either.

Re: An Email From Acronis

Hi Bob,
I don't feel bad about not getting an email, heck - I 'did' get the email. What bothers me is that I had dig the email up and pull the email apart just to get at the link for the survey (that apparently did have my id number on it).
