Vista Desktop Icons too big (Vista Business)

Hi Vista is very challenging. I have normal fonts and dpi settings on my new machine but the icons on the desktop are still too big compared to my xp computer. I can't make them smaller than sixe 16 setting.
1 Can i somehow shrink the desktop icons?
    2. Is there a better desktop configuration package or overlay package to control vista appearance/
    Thanks
    Jerome

Right click on the desktop, and select view.

    John UNFORTUNATELY NOT THAT Easy.
You can't shrink the icon size below 16 and on the new computer this means I can only put 1/2 as many icons on the desktop as my old computer.
No hopefully there is a solution to shrinking

Another way is to hold the Ctrl key down and then use the scroll wheel on your mouse to increase or decrease the size of the icons. I'm not aware of any other methods to do this.

    OR - you could get a bigger screen. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    1) The default Desktop icon size on XP is "32 px"... NOT "16 px"
    2) The "16 px" sized icons are what is used in Windows Explorer and not on the Desktop which is very small. (see screenshot below)
    3) The "Classic" size in the "View" menu which was mentioned to you already is in fact the size used by XP, i.e., "32 px"

Re: Vista Desktop Icons too big (Vista Business)

In Windows XP, the default size for desktop icons is 32 pixels, and the minimum size you can set them to is 16 pixels. So in that respect, Windows Vista is not different from Windows XP.
Pilgrim (Jeff) attached a 16 pixel icon to show how small that is.
Are you perhaps using Windows Vista at a lower screen resolution than you had in Windows XP?

    Jerome,

Now "I" am not quite sure what YOU are trying to say? <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/giggle.gif>

    1) By following the advice already given: Right-click on the Desktop, select "View" and choose "Classic icons". This will give you the default XP Desktop icon size of "32 px".

    2) IF <------ you had a wheel mouse, you can hold down the "Ctrl" key and then with the wheel, increase or decrease the size of the Desktop icons (20 up & down integrals available). The smallest they will go is "16 px".

    3) The "pdf" icon I included in the screenshot is in fact a "16 px" icon which I grabbed from Windows Explorer just to show you what a "16 px" sized icon looks like.

    4) If you are wanting your Desktop icons to be smaller than "16 px", you are going to have to find a 3rd-party icon utility, e.g., Stardock "IconX". I cannot remember specifically how small IconX can shrink Desktop icons but I suspect it can't go below "16 px", although it may be able to do that.

Regardless..... an icon smaller than "16 px" will be relatively useless since the details of the image will be very difficult to see.

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Pilgrim on 18-Jul-07 16:16. )</P>Hans,

Look at the size of the font, in his screenshot, on both the icon text labels and the Taskbar application button, e.g., "Interactive s" and they are MUCH larger than the default size. I suspect he has increased the dpi setting {or decreased the screen resolution} and thus even a 16 px size icon will appear much larger than it actually is.

Re: Vista Desktop Icons too big (Vista Business)

    Hi All
My misunderstanding, correct if right click on desktop and hit view and then hit classic icons instead of medium icons. that works. I mistakenly thought you hit personalize, windows color and appearance and then classic appearance, this did not work
I did not see the icons after view originally.
    THanks
    much much better
