Opening multiples files at once (office 2000)

I need to open multiple Excel files at once. Don't know if this is really an Excel question or not but.......

I have five Excel files that are located in different directories that need to be open at the same time. I created shortcuts to these files in one directory. When I highlight them all and either hit enter or select "open" from the right click menu, only one opens. I have to click them individually to get them all open. This is still faster than going to each folder to open them.

Is it because they are all "shortcuts" that they won't all open at once?

    Thanks

I think you're correct that only one opens because they're shortcuts.

    Option 1: using the shortcuts
    - Start Excel.
    - Select File | Open or click the Open button on the toolbar.
    - Select the shortcuts by clicking the first, then Shift+Clicking the last if they're together, or by Ctrl+Clicking them individually.
    - Click Open.

    Option 2: using a workspace.
    - Start Excel.
    - Open each of the five workbooks by selecting File | Open, going to the correct folder, etc.
    - If you wish, arrange the workbook windows the way you want.
    - Select File | Save Workspace...
    - Specify a name (and path) and save the .xlw file.

If you open the .xlw file, either from Windows Explorer or from within Excel, it will open the five workbooks and arrange the windows as they were when you saved the workspace file.

    Hi Hans,

I love the workspace idea! What a time saver!

I noticed however, that when the files are opened, instead of opening maximized, they are opened windowed. Also, since the spreadsheets are large, I have the headers frozen with "freeze panes" but that is gone as well and finally, I don't want to show the zeroes but for some reason that option is checked again.

When I save the workspace, is there something else I should be doing to preserve the spreadsheets as they were?

    Thanks,
    Louise

You aren't doing anything wrong. The workspace concept dates from very long ago, and it hasn't been updated since. It ignores such features as freeze panes. Since these features are important to you, using a workspace doesn't suit your purposes. I fear you'll have to use the other option. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>
