    Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

After trying out a "hotkey" utility, I seem to have lost the functionality of (some of) the standard windows shortcut keys e.g. WinKey + E for Windows Explorer. Does anybody know of a simple way to restore the defaults? A(nother) little utility for instance? Or do I need to try to remap everything manually?

    thanks

Kelly's got a bunch with the word "shortcut" in her list but none looks like what you need, you just never know: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I guess you might also look around in TweakUI to see, even if it means "toggling" on and off a few settings to see if something you can do will "jolt" your system back into compliance.

    Re: Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

Thanks Al. I've had a look through the site, as well as playing with TweakUI, but no joy on this. I was (pretty) sure there was somewhere in the registry that stored the necessary info/ settings, but blowed if I can find any info on same. If programs are able to set global/ system-wide hotkeys (or get rid of them) and not even need to be running to capture keystrokes, then there must be some permanent repository for them, and I can think only of the registry. ???

    Re: Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

Thanks Joe. This is a very interesting piece of software in itself. MSKLC Information mentions "Modify an existing keyboard layout (.KLC) file and build a new layout from it" but I don't have any .KLC files on HD. Although this tool might be the answer, I'm still convinced there must be some area of the registry where this "standard shortcuts" information is meant to be.

Are you prepared to name any names? It may be a 'utility' to avoid if it doesn't give you back your default configuration if you decide you don't want it...

I'm sure you've already tried this, but, to state the obvious..... System Restore ???

Odd as it may sound, I'm avoiding that if at all possible. Quite a few changes have taken place between testing the rogue and actually discovering its legacy. I'm hoping to avoid breaking anything else, so I hope it won't come to that.

    I'm confused - as normal!

Why would you not just edit the shortcut keys (with Winkey?) to return them to the standard. According to Winkey, there are only 9 standard settings which are listed. It shouldn't take too long to do this?

Or am I missing something (as usual)?

I don't know, but I don't think Alan has used the Copernic Winkey software, if it is that one you are referring to with Winkey.

OTOH, maybe it could be used to trigger the Windows-key to work as normal.

I don't know about this and the registry, but the standard shortcuts could be coded into explorer.exe.

    Re: Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

    Alan,
I guess, as you said you looked at Tweak UI, you have tried the: Explorer > checkbox "Enable Windows + X hotkeys", enabling/disabling with a logoff between.

I would think that the shortcuts are coded into explorer, and not mapped in the registry, but if one want to change the standard shortcuts or disable the Windows key, one can use the registry to override.

The first thing I come think about is Policies, but since I'm on a XP Home system there is no easy way to add, or edit policies, since no Local Group Policy Editor.

Then there is a "tweak" to disable the Windows key in the Keyboard Layout sub key to the Control set. Maybe it is this one that Tweak UI uses, on the other hand, maybe not, since Tweak UI winkey is per-user setting.

    To disable the Windows key
    HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout
    Data Type: REG_BINARY
    Value Name: Scancode Map
    Value Data: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 00 5B E0 00 00 5C E0 00 00 00 00

See http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweak_bookmarks.htm almost half way down. Obviously if it's there, to enable one removes it.

On the page Al referred; #9 left (.reg) "Disable the Windows Logo Keys" does the above registry change to disable.

#78 right (.vbs) "Enable or Disable Winkeys" the script toggles the Windows key with a setting in:
    HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies ExplorerNoWinKeys

I haven't tried any of Kelly's reg- or script files since I'm not so fond of running scripts in general, having a non English OS, and also a working OS. But of course one can always have a look at the file before, do a back up etc. BUT the tips & files from that site are reliable.

    Re: Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

I did think of this as a possibility. Two problems:

    1. Winkey will not allow overriding the standard shortcuts it "sees" (below) even though they aren't working.
    2. I'd really prefer to be able to have the standard functionality without (another) background program running. It appears Winkey traps keystrokes and processes them itself, which means any new hotkeys only work with Winkey running.

    thanks anyhow

    Re: Restore standard shortcuts (XP/SP2)

Thanks for all the info Argus.

    I've given the TweakUI toggling a shot, but to no avail. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
I've checked out the HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies ExplorerNoWinKeys key, and it's set to binary zero.
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout doesn't have a "Scancode Map" key at all.

From what you've said, I tend to think it's most likely to be an Explorer tweak/ setting somewhere. But "where" remains a mystery so far. I'll keep ploughing along, but may end up at system restore I'm afraid.

    Alan

BTW, the Win key itself still activates the start menu, so it must be at least being recognized as "there".
