Create shortcut for Woody's Lounge? (Windows XP Home SP2)

I would like to notify all who have helped me with my computer problems recently. I finally formatted my hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP and put back all my programs, using the CD's and the web for those which I manually installed.

System Restore is up and running, creating restore points. It was a hard decision but I finally realized that I had no other choice.

I have one request, how do you create a link to this lounge that I can place in Quick Launch?

Thank you, one and all, for your valuable assistance, and I pray I will not have further problems in the future.

Gloria

You should be able to drag it from the address bar of your browser to the Quick Launch toolbar.

Gloria,
Really glad to hear that you are back running OK again. The solution of a clean install is sometimes a hard
( but necessary one ) to make. It is also a good way to get a new and fresh start on your system by cleaning out a lot of debris that will accumulate over time.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh That is so simple and easy to do, why didn't I think of that? Please don't answer the question, I already know the answer and I don't need any one to ask me "what is it that I know."

Because if you don't know the answer than you have no need to know.

I wouldn't feel too bad - I am always forgetting that half the point of Windows is its drag and drop functionality!

That's so true, but think of the hard work, all the time spent putting things back almost like it was before. I have been two days installing prgrams that I installed from the web, some of them I had to write to the company and ask persmission to install again at no charge, then sit and wait for their response. But, I almost enjoyed it, Dell took over my computer and spent hours trying to fix the problems. When that failed there was nothing else to do but format (a dirty word in my book). He formatted and installed every CD that I wanted to reinstall. He installed my Windows drivers and put them in the right places, everything in Device Driver had to be running with no problems before he let me go. He worked from 11 Am until 7 PM. I just had to click on things that required an agreement, and put CD's in the drive. It cost $120 for one incident, but in my opinion it was worth every dime. Best of all the tech.was Canadian, and not someone who I could not understand (I know you know what I mean).

Nevertheless I'd rather not have to go through that again any time soon. Don't bother to tell me that if I had made a backup, I could have saved myself a whole lot of work, I already know that. Anyway, I'm happy as a baby that just had his dirty diaper changed.

Glad to see that you are up and running again Gloria.

BUT - in one of your earlier posts, you were very adamant about the fact that you didn't require and didn't want a backup program. Might this latest incident (in a long and ongoing series of problems) have changed your mind???

I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons of taking 20 minutes to restore a backup versus several weeks of aggravation and the cost of support calls. Personally (in my opinion) it's a no-brainer!

Re: Create shortcut for Woody's Lounge? (Windows XP Home SP2)

It's a no-brainer for me too, John. I'm always reluctant to try new thing (as you may well know). I've never done it before and that's probably why I am still not backing up. I have nothing very important on the hard drive, just Windows, Programs, My Documents, Favorites in IE, I use nothing in Office except Word, and I'm not sure just what to back up. I'm not asking for a tutorial on the process, just making a statement and explaing why I don't do it.

I have an HP- CD-Writer machine and the disks to use, and I tried it a long time ago running Windows 98 SE.. It went well until I reached the last disc and I make a mistake, so al I had done before was useless. I never tried it again. I must admit that I didn't have a program that I could run, that was my biggest mistake. I don't think they were availabe or popular like they are now. Perhaps when I get everything back I will buy a program and try again.

Thanks for the push, you're not the first one here to suggest that I back up my hard drive.

Re: Create shortcut for Woody's Lounge? (Windows X

Since your previous effort with getting back in order seems to have you in a "warm" frame of mind on backup, may I comment there as well and send you for a short bit of reading? Given the inconvenience, hassle and possible problems with CDs, I wouldn't use them as a backup vehicle. Today's technology makes external USB drives so inexpensive and EASY to connect that I can't understand why I didn't do it sooner. Prices have really come down. Most external USB drives are about the size of what my wife used to call a "clutch handbag."

Now, take a trip to <post#=662,102>post 662,102</post#> and browse through that thread for some ideas. There are tons of other threads like it in the Software Forum, and believe it or not, there ARE other programs besides TrueImage. It's just that so many of us here have fallen in love with it, that the picture always seems to get clouded toward TI. (Keep in mind that the poster on that thread is using Vista so there's some comments about it that don't impact you.)

"Perhaps when I get everything back I will buy a program and try again."

Probably a very wise decision Gloria. Most backup programs are so easy to use, and if you do have questions, there are many here who can help. I totally agree with Al's recommendation to purchase an external USB drive for backups. As well as being inexpensive, external drives make backups essentially a two or three click operation.

I'd like to take a little different approach. You seem to want a something simple and straight forward. You also do not seem to be in a big hurry. So, depending on your budget I think you should wait a couple of months or so and check out OEM versions of Windows Home Server. See Windows Home Server for more information. The initial reviews I've read are almost all very positive. The one feature that may interest you is an automatic daily backup. Plus it is easy to get setup and running.

I watched the video and Windows Server seems to be for people who have more than one PC connected together. A server, I am not. Am I mistaken?

More than one PC networked together is one scenario. However, there are other uses. I was just pointing it out for the ease of use and automatic backup capability.

Just as soon as I finish get my house (computer) together again and running with all the programs I want reinstall, I will begin my search for a backup program starting with your link to a previous post.

I have a question concerning backing up. When I purchase an external USB drive, I still need additional software like True Image, correct?
