Are you booting from the CD? Is this an OEM supplied CD and not just a Windows CD? What vvendor? OEMs can do just about whatever they want to affect the reinstall process. I'd still think you'd have the option at some point to format the HD though.

You can't format the system drive (usually C), from inside the OS. If you are going format or quick format the C drive and reinstall Windows, you will have to boot from the Windows CD.

Doing a format on a system drive while it is in use, is like doing brain surgery on oneself, impossible. So one uses the install media.

When you say Reinstallation CD, is this some kind of OEM-license version of Windows, i.e. a DELL, HP etc. machine?

Glad you got the boot from CD figured out. Now, please be more specific about running slower. Is it loading programs, accessing the internet, using certain programs, etc.?

The slowness problem seems to have gone away on its own. Everything loads faster now, and as far as I can tell it runs faster. The best example I have of the former slow running was when I used Freecell. It usually runs so fast I can barely see the cards move when I concede a game, but lately it was running v e r y slowly.

Al,
-----------------------------------------------
Many of us have found a good boot setup combination to be: CD first, then floppy (if present) and finally hard drive.
-----------------------------------------------
Except me. My feeling is that on bootup, the system has to look first for a CD, then a floppy and finally the HD. A little more time involved.
I use HD first, then CD then floppy. If I need to boot to a CD I just go into the BIOS and change the sequence temporarily. WHen done with the CD, I change back to the original setup.

You're right about that, Bob, and that's why The Lounge is such a good platform for these kinds of discussions!

You're a nit-picker though, as I can't even detect the small amount of time my BIOS spends looking for a CD or floppy before it goes on ahead and boots to the hard drive. I only do it so I don't have to "remember" to make a change in the BIOS if I need to boot the system with the Windows CD, or..... Truck on, matey!
