Printing From Browsers (Fx and IE)

This is a question that has plagued me for some time and involves either Firefox or IE in their very latest versions and has been there (for me) through a number of versions. Therefore I think it has something to do with web page design or layout or the settings of my HP 970 printer. When printing some pages from either of the browsers, I get very, very small font type and very difficult to read such as this page: Oscar the cat - CNN.com. I also have to print it landscape or some of the text at the right will truncate and not be visible in the printout.

On the other hand, if I print this page, which is a medical journal entry about the above story, the article prints just fine in a nice, readable sized font: NEJM -- A Day in the Life of Oscar the Cat and I can print it nicely in portrait mode.

I can see in the first article that there is wide space onscreen on both the left and right side, as if the thing was HTML formatted for a specific size display, whereas in the second example, the article fills the width of my browser window. I don't know if these are clues or not. As I get ready to print, I look at all the printer settings and, unless I'm missing something discrete, I don't see anything to help me out. Does anyone have any clues to what the problem is?

In IE7, you can experiment in Print Preview - there are various zoom settings.

Although FireFox 2 has similar options, it makes a mess of the print preview on my PC, I cannot find a reasonable setting - either the text is way too small, or I get blank pages (except for the header and footer).

    Al,
And <!post=Jefferson's "Crop4Print",627625>Jefferson's "Crop4Print"<!/post> doesn't work? I.e. to select what you want to print. Though the CNN.com has some odd "frame" for heading and "story highlights", as if one didn't have the stamina to read the article, selcting the article works OK without the heading.

Funny you should ask that, Argus. No, it's no longer "quite" working for me and I don't know why. Back in the time when Jefferson was writing that code, it worked just fine for me. I still have no extensions running in Fx but I do have some customizations in my user prefs file. I'm also not sure if CNN may have done something in their recently re-structured web sites. Anyway, when I select the text in that article, the text of each line is truncated on the right end. I've done lots of fooling with it on page setup and can't get a good printout. It's something I'll have to come back to later and just keep on my "things to do" list.

A quick followup. It IS the re-design that CNN did I guess that's causing the problem. I have had Jefferson's script bookmarked ever since he wrote it. I went to the Daily Mail here: Grim rea-purr: The cat that can predict death | the Daily Mail and selected all the text, starting with the word "Grim" in the title. When I then select Jefferson's print thing bookmark, the pages are ready for print preview which formats them nicely for printing, minus all the sidebar ads, AND quite readable in font size.

As far as I can tell, this is a decision by the people who run cnn.com. To escape the tyranny of their style sheet in this regard, you would have to increase your minimum font size.

Tools>Options..., Content tab, Fonts & Colors Advanced button

Try 18 for a size that prints reasonably well. But be prepared to switch it back for regular viewing or many page layouts will be wrecked. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Added: I tested using the Print button at the bottom of the article. Quite difficult to get a clean print without it.
