Windows Explorer Features (Vista )

In the July 30 edition of the WXPNews newsletter, Deb Shinder states (referring to Windows Explorer in Vista):

In particular, I absolutely hated not being able to just click Recent Places to get back to a folder I'd had open earlier. Whoever came up with that idea was a genius; I've found it to be extremely useful. Another great aspect of Vista's Explorer that I missed was the ability to click on any level in the path to go there, and I felt as if I were operating blind as I navigated through document files without the preview feature that lets me see the contents of a Word doc without opening it.

I tried the preview feature and while I could preview .txt and .pdf files, it would display "No preview available" when I selected any .doc file. I have Office 2003 installed. Any thoughts as to why I can't preview Word files would be appreciated.

While on the topic of Windows Explorer, can anyone enlighten me on the significance of the check-box that shows up when you check "Use check boxes to select items" in Folder Options>View?

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

I just noticed that the check box/check mark also shows up on the desktop icons.

The preview works just great on my Vista and Office 29007 machine. I do not have a Vista and Office 2003.

It appears to be a method of selecting one or more files and then being able to apply some type of action against those files. It nay aid those that use a "Single Click" in selecting multi files.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The preview pane works great for me too but I also have Word 2007, which I wouldn't think would have any bearing upon this feature. It will preview just about any type of document regardless of the source.

And, I've never seen those check boxes before until I read the OP's question about them.

According to HowToGeek, it's an optional alternative to using Ctrl and click when selecting multiple files.

Interesting, Leif, but I still have to press Ctrl to select multiple files. If I don't press Ctrl, only the last file clicked is selected (with a check mark). However, this is not an issue with me anymore. What I really want to find out is why I can't preview .doc files.

No solution I'm afraid, but you are not alone: Windows Vista Performance and Maintenance.

If you hover to the left of the file (folder) name you will see a check box, check it and now hover another file.

    Dave,

I've had people complain about this issue too and my advice has been the same as yours. What they are doing is clicking on the file "name" rather than clicking in the box after mousing over the file name. It does work as designed if done correctly..... at least for most.

Leif, thanks for the link. Perhaps this is a Word 2003 issue as it seems to work with Word 2007.

Re: Windows Explorer Features (Vista )

Dave/Jeff: Thanks for pointing out how to use the check boxes properly. I can select multiple files if I click on the check box itself, but only the last file if I click on the file name.

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB
