Chart with label instead of points

I want to create an XY chart where there is a text label in place of the point marker. If that can't be done, I would want the point with the label next to it.

The data is in three columns, X, Y, and Label.

I'd make the points the same colour as the background <font color=red>after</font color=red> I placed text boxes over top of them.

I assume that your reply indicates that there is no automatic way to have the labels shown. It would be nice to be able to update the data and have the chart follow it.

I did decide on an alternative method of displaying the data. I put all the data in a pair of columns and then edited in 15 ranges that I then edited the shape and colors to denote similarities. It may actually be a bit more easy to understand than my original plan.

You can do it with very few lines of code in vba. References that deal with this datalabeling in charts are:
    1) Excel 2000 VBA programmer's reference from John Green (Wrox)
    2) Excel 2000 power programming with VBA from John Walkenback (IDG Books)

Re: Chart with label instead of points

Get this free tool, it works a beauty:
    http://archive.baarns.com/excel/free/Exceluts.asp

    a) Download and install, you will get a new entry under Tools
Make your XY scatter as usual
    c) Run tool and indicate label range
    d) Select Format|DataSeries and choose Pattern for Line=None and for Marker=None or a very small one if you need to be precise
    e) Do not forget to define label alignment = Center

BTW: To put a name tag to a line which will follow the value, select a suitable single point (*) and define it to show a label/value. Then either edit the text box, or put an (external) link to a cell (select text box, click on the formula bar, write "=" and then select cell, only way AFAIK)

(*) do not drag the point, or your value will change in the table too, unless the datapoint is in a protected cell....

    Bill,

Visit Stephen Bullen's Excel page. Select the Excel MVP page and you will find an add-in (XY...exe, I can't remember the exact name) that does the job. http://linkURL
    http://www.bmsltd.ie/Excel/Default.html
If needed, I can send you the macro I wrote. Just send me a private message.
