    Mini Freeze-ups (XP/SP2)

My 4 year old Dell has recently developed what I call a "mini freeze-up" on almost all actions (ie: close file, minimize screen, open e-mail on AOL, downloads, play video, etc) it last 5 to 20 seconds and then proceeds, when I close an application (Excel, Word) it almost always brings up a dialog box that program is not responding and I must use "End Task" to close. I have done all the normal checks and have plenty of available RAM, and the CPU usage during problems is usually low.

What were the "normal" checks that you made beside RAM and CPU usage?
Have you recently added or changed any app or security program settings?
    Cleared out your TEMP folders?

It sounds like something is running in the background before it allows shutdown.
What does Task Manager show as running apps?

    Bob,
    Thanks for replying.
I have cleared all Windows & Internet Temp files, defraged disk, ran system file checker, review start-up processes for unknowns, etc.
The task manager only lists the current application.
I didn't mention before but when opening a window it slowly paints the screen and my main desktop keeps losing the icon images and must restore them frequently. There are no new security apps "that I know of". I use the "AOL" firewall & virus protection system
    Any ideas or more questions?

    Re: Mini Freeze-ups (XP/SP2)

I still suspect there is something running that is slowing things down.
The question is Hardware or Software?
I would go to Start>Run and type in msconfig to bring up the startup options.
In the general Tab, check Diagnostic start up which will only load the basic necessities.
    OK out and reboot.
If things look normal then it should be software.
Go back into msconfig and check Selective startup. Now only enable one or two things at a time and go through the reboot process. If you find one of the items now slows things up, re-enable all of the others and leave the suspect startup disabled for now anyway.

My GUESS? The AOL AV program. Just a SWAG ( Scientific Wild A-- Guess )
    Try that and post back.
