    Personal.xls (XP/2003)

Occasionally when I open Excel I see a "File in Use" message which reads "Personal.xls in locked for editing by ......."

I am offered three button choices: "Read Only", "Notify", and "Cancel". I usually choose "Read Only" just so I can work on the file.

I have not recently made any changes to my Personal.xls, so why do I get this message. How do I prevent it from occurring again.

    Thanks for your help,
    Richard Spring

This probably means that you started a second instance of Excel.
For example, if you have a shortcut to Excel in your Quick Launch toolbar, it is easy to click this shortcut while Excel is already open. This will cause a second instance of Excel to start. The new instance tries to open Personal.xls but finds that it has already been opened (by the first instance).

If no visible instance of Excel is open when this happens, there might be an invisible one left in memory by another program that called Excel but didn't close it properly.

That makes a lot of sense. I sometimes try to launch Excel when I already have a file open.
I do not see the tab on the Quick Launch tool-bar at the bottom of the screen because I have set it to hide after each use.
I could not figure out why this occurred sometimes on different computers.

    Who know? <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45> ------- Seem that the Lounge knows !! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Thanks Hans

Would Brooke's post in the <!post=Discovering background EXCEL running, 339582>Discovering background EXCEL running<!/post> help pin down the problem?
