Put movie 1 gig size on website

Hello,

I have a movie in quicktime which is 1 gig in size and l would like to put on my website, l tried to use both you tube and google video but both failed.
Any help would be appreciated. I cannot afford to pay for hosting ,as this is one off movie which l want to put on a website.

Frankly 1 Gb for a download is best described as extreme, even in this day and age with fast connection speeds. I strongly suggest you break it down into smaller files or run it through an editing software that will reduce the quality and size.

Presumably you followed the instructions at How to link to a single YouTube video and noted that All videos uploaded to YouTube have a 100MB file size limit?

Apart from which, I agree with Jezza - 1GB is a ridiculous size to expect viewers to download!

I don't expect people to download a file, just click on a link to the file, l assume this is not possible with a file this big?

Yes, even if you are streaming it, 1 Gigabyte is just too large. I only have a 10 Gb monthly bandwidth for my site which is roughly average for a basic account and so if 10 people view this extremely large file you propose to upload you will not be able to view it again, defeating the object.

Downloading/streaming same thing

If you FTP it you will also find it will fail as it will time out, most servers are much faster for downloading that uploading.....You will need to rethink this.

This smiley - <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35> - is roughly 1.5Kb in size. To view it on your monitor, you have to download every one of its 1,515 bytes so that your browser can render it.

You can't view it or anything else without downloading it first. It's a fact of life, I'm afraid.

In theory, if your video is 100 minutes long and the viewer only watches 1 minute of it, they only need to download 1/100 of 1Gb = 10Mb. However, I presume you expect people to download the entire video, in which case you are first have to find a host who will accept such a large file and then accept that individuals are each going to have to download the 1Gb!

Assuming the maximum upload size of all free video hosts is 100Mb, and you insist on using a host such as YouTube, your best option would be break it down into ten parts and upload them separately.

Note: - I believe all videos uploaded to YouTube are converted to Flash, so you have no control over the final quality or resolution. The resultant Flash download could, of course, be a lot less than 100Mb...

How many people are you expecting to view this video? It might be simpler to post them each a copy on DVD!

I know that you've got it now, after those tutorials from Jezza and Leif, right? But just one further comment. As you are NOW reading your computer screen, EVERYTHING you are looking at has been DOWNLOADED to YOUR hard drive, including all the graphics. It's called your browser's CACHE, aka temporary internet files.

Let's do a little maths, assuming 100% efficiency and approximating cheerfully.

If your movie is 1 GB, that is 1000 MB in size. Suppose you can serve the movie at 4 Mb[its]ps (= 0.5 MB[ytes]ps), and the user can receive it at that same speed. Then the download time will be 1000 / 0.5 s = 2000 s = something over 33 minutes. You are asking rather a lot of someone to sit around for at least half an hour, and in practice probably something closer to an hour. And if the user also has an ISP cap on the amount of data received and transmitted, as most in the UK have, then it had better be something pretty special...
