    Search Freezes Computer

When I click on Search my computer freezes and I have to reboot. I've searched for possible reasons, and fixes like running SFC and it stopped several times and I had to select Retry. When it finished, the problem remained.

There could be two possible reasons in my estimation:

    1. I instaled Secunia Personal Software Inspector Beta. I really know better but after using its prior version and having no problems, I bite. It's now off my system but the damage is done.

    2. I found an Article ID 918165 MS0-015 that contains a possible reason, I installed security update 908531 which mentions a file named VERCLSID.EXE.

I tried System Restore, it reported that it was unable to go back to the any of the dates I tried. That makes me believe that it's a System problem. While trying different restore points I received a lot of DLL Initalizatio failed to initialize messages. which follow:

    ipffw.exe
    OSA.exe
    Google Toolbar
    Notifier.exe
    Display.exe
    gpqtra 08.exe
    Launcher.exe
    Natural Color Load.exe

I also search Event Viewer and there was no ERROR that came close to the problem.

SR would close, the computer reboot and I would be informed that a restore point was NOT created and no changes had been make to the computer.

I need help to fix the situation, this ones not earth shaking but I use Search all day, every day and I need it fixed.
I will appreciate any assistance offered.

    Gloria

As I believe you are running XP SP2, this would be better in the XP forum - I'll move it there now.

Can you post a link to the '918165 MS0-015' article you mentioned please?

I never learned how to post a link, too busy reinstalling all my programs, etc.

Thank you for the move, I wasn't certain which board I should post this one to.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

This is a rather old one. Yes, some had problems with MS06-015 (908531) and older third party software they had installed. The bulletin was revised, and the security update came in a second version, of course not interesting to those who did not experience the problem, or solved it other ways.

So, for those who had problems the solution was to download the new version of 908531 (MS06-015), released 25 April 2006.

What made you think that your problem with Search Companion (a.k.a. "search") was related to the security update; do you see any of the symptoms mentioned in KB918165?

Interrupted by a phone call; this post was in edit for 90 min.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

Don't be so hard on me Doc. You know how many problems I've had lately and that my PC was down. When I formatted and got everything almost the way I wanted, that took a lot of my time. I printed the instructions that were sent me by members of this Lounge, they're buried somewhere on my desk. I promise to find them and do better.

Can you bear with me just a little while longer?

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

I THINK it could be a possible cause because under Symptoms I have the first four HP software listed under Cause.

    Hp PhotoSmart software.
HP OfficeJet J5780 All-in-One Printer which scans, faxes and prints.
    HP CD-RWs and Hp DVD-RWs

Under Symptoms, I don't see Search but there are so many listed. Maybe I'm the first to have the problem with search, it's possible isn't it?

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

Anything is possible, as they say, but sometimes the possibility is very, very small. I don't think you would be the first, after this time of bulletin revisions etc.

Anyhow, the version of 908531 that you should have installed with your latest Windows reinstall, should have been version 2. That is, if you didn't use some old, previously downloaded copy. But if you updated your Windows with the updates needed after install you would be offered version 2, and probably have it.

Check Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs > Check the box Show Updates > Scroll down to find 908531 > Click to select the update > Click on the link Support Information.

It will show you a simple dialog telling you the version of the installed update; in the case of 908531, version 1 or 2. See screen shot.

    What do you find?

In the HP case it was the "Hpgs2wnd.exe" that once was distributed with some software, and their DeskJet printers that includes a card reader etc. In many cases as with the Nvidia drivers, to have the latest software would help. But still, version 2 of 908531 is the simple automatic resolution.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

You're right about that, I didn't like what I saw. I'm way away from being ready to do a repair. I just did a format, so that lets those suggests out, but thanks anyway for the articles.

I did find a work around though. Press F3 while in My Computer or Windows Explorer to open the default Search Companion window. It works because I tried it.

The Start Button still doesn't work, but I have found the way to do searches without it.

The information found in 908531 is that it is version 2.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

Well, then you should not have any of the problems listed in KB918165, related to the install of the original 908531. On the other hand Search wasn't one of them.

I don't know what you do to your PC, but there are some problems IIRC that can affect both search/help/SR. As to SR, IIRC you didn't run Norton products, correct? (Was NOD32 or something else).

    Gloria,
I think you STILL can't see the distinction or difference between a REPAIR re-install and a complete Clean re-install.

Repair will restore any corrupt system files but will NOT touch your settings or other things you may have added after the OS install.
    It's really painless.
A clean install starts from scratch and all things go back to a default state.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

I do a whole lot less to my computer than users who know a lot about their use. I have nothing on my hard drive but programs, My Documents, the operating system and that's it. If I remove things they are programs only. My hard drive has very little on it. So, what can I do that would cause problems. I run disk defrag, check disk, and anti-virus programs religiously. I am clean of viruses and ran check disk this morning and it reported that my hard drive is clean with no errors..

I think my computer has a boogie man that stops things from running. For instance, I used Search, played some games and shut down. The next day, I click on Search and it's broken. But until its fixed I have a work around that lets me do searches without clicking on the Search button, thank God.

    Re: Search Freezes Computer

I think I understand the difference between the two. But with repair you still have to reinstall all the security updates, service packs and hotfixes. The last time I had to put them back, there were 38 and when I did them all at one time, some didn't take and I had to install them again. I can do it but I'd rather do a repair as a next to last resort and you know what the last resort is.
