norton internet security v10

(Edited by DaveA on 11-Sep-07 08:43. Fixed URL code)
I wish to remove the 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security that came with a shiney new Vista (Home Premium) laptop. I know about the Symantec Norton removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039

but the tool varies depending on which Norton product is to be removed. How do I know which tool to download when the Symantec page lists the products by year but all I know is the version number shown in Help | About , which is v10.1.0.26.

My Google searches suggest v10.1 is a 2007 product and the 2008 product is v10.2 but I'm not sure. Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks,

Ken

Ken,
I have NOT used this tool, I just use the uninstall that is in the control panel. Make sure that you check the ALL when asked. Then browse the drive for any left over folders. You may need to do a second uninstall form the control panel, on the "Update" as it seems to be a separate program.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Are you sure that there is any difference in the tool? The instruction state "The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products from your computer " - it seems that the steps are version-specific, but the tool is not. When I removed Norton from the Bride's machine I didn't bother looking up the version - I grabbed the tool and ran it.

Note to Dave; the Control Panel Norton uninstall isn't as complete as the tool Stuck is considering.

I tend to agree with John on this. I removed Norton AV earlier this year and didn't bother with any version #'s. Just grabbed the tool and went to town. A word of caution though. I would strongly suggest that you make a full image backup of your system before attempting to remove ANY Symantec product. I had an issue 2 years ago when I was instructed to remove an old version of Norton AV (2003 I think) to upgrade to the latest version. This was before the general public was told of the removal tool and I dutifully followed instructions and then rebooted as instructed. My system was completely and unretrievably trashed. I worked with Symantec support for 3 days and then simply gave up and restored the image I'd made right before I started. About 2 days later, I found the tool hidden deep in the Symantec web pages and used it to remove the old version and then installed the new version (I'd already paid for it). When that subscription ran out this year, I made another image and then used the tool to remove Norton AV and installed Avast. Don't miss Norton at all !!!!

No, I don't know if the differences are in the tool or removal steps. I read the headline you quote too but I've read enough here in the Lounge to know that Symantec products can be a little 'untidy' and reluctant to go away, especially if not treated in just the right way so I'd still like to work out if the v10.1.0.26 that came pre-installed is the 2006, 07 or 08 product.

I've been Googling a bit more but not come to any definite conclusions yet. I suppose I could just phone Symantec but I can imagine it might take me a while to get past their horror that I would want to remove the thing before I've even configured it and tasted the 90 day trial!

PS I'm still finding bits of a Norton AV trial I tried out on my old Win 98 box many years ago

It makes you realise just how accurate the word trial actually is...

They buried this page pretty deep too:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgen...hho&lg=en&ct=uk

Still doesn't tell me if v10.1.0.26 is the 2007 or 2008 product. In fact it adds more confusion into the mix by indicating that the 2007 version comes in two flavours ('latest' and 'older') but now I know it's not 2006.

and the winner is...

>Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.
>I understand from your message that you would like to know thw version of Norton Internet Security(NIS) installed in your computer.
>Ken, the version (10.1.0.26) installed in your computer is Norton Internet Security(NIS) 2007.

This response came through about 25mins after I submitted a question via the Symantec web site. I suppose I should have done that in the first place but since Norton is one of those love it or hate it bits of software I knew it would get a worthwhile discussion going here.
