Losing formatting with bookmarks (2000)

When I use REF fields referring to bookmarks, the formatting all goes 'pear shaped'. How can I ensure that the current formatting of a paragraph is retained when the bookmark text is updated? Thanks, Andy.

Right-click the REF field and select Toggle Field Codes from the popup menu.

Make the field code look like this

{ REF bookmarkname * charformat }

Select the entire field code and format it the way you want (if needed), then press F9 to hide the field code and update the result. The formatting should now be OK.
