    Long shutdown (Windows XP Professional)

When I restart my computer it hangs for a very long time (5 -10 minutes, but occasionally up to 15 minutes) at the "Windows is shutting down" point in the reboot process. After several immediate restarts, I can reduce the delay at the shutdown point to 90 seconds, which still seems too long. I have looked at the management console for both system and application errors and can not find anything unusual.

    Jim,
Take a look at this Windows XP slow shutdown and reboot troubleshooting guide.

It has a LOT of possibilities THERE

Bob's link seems to have a LOT of pursuits for you to check out, but I just wanted to make a comment that a 90-seconds to shutdown seems like a pretty decent time to me. I have a bunch of TSRs running on my system and when I click to restart my system, it does take a minute or two before all the running stuff is successfully shutdown and Windows can move on with the process.

I am with Al here, 90 seconds is nothing with all of the "Protection" and other required stuff running. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I would be happy with 90 seconds. I have been keeping track of 6 restarts today. Time until the "Windows is shutting down" finishes. The results in minutes are: 4, 2, 12, 3, 2, 2. I have studied Bob's trouble shooting guide and nothing there seems to be causing the problem.

Problem solve. It appears to have been a corrupted ZoneAlarm Security Suite issue. I removed ZA, did a clean install, and all is well. It took a good deal of detective work to uncover the problem. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
