Auto Correct Entries Disappear (Office 2000 SR2)

    I am operating Word 2000 SR2 on Windows 2000 Pro SR2.

Auto Correct entries I add to the list in Tools | Auto Correct do not stay there but disappear. I thought there must be a problem with saving Normal.dot on closing Word but today I discovered that entries I had restored did not work 10 minutes later - and indeed were no longer in the list - even though I had not closed Word - indeed I was still working on the same document! The only thing I can think of that may be relevant is that I do have "Always make back-up copy" and "Save Auto Recovery Info every 5 mins" activated.

Can anyone suggest a solution, please.

From what I understand, the settings for AutoCorrect are stored in the registry, not the normal.dot. Here is an article that may be of help. :<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm>What exactly does the Data Key in the Registry store?</A>

    Hi Noel,

AutoCorrect entries are stored in *.acl files. (With the exception of RTF entries, such as symbols and formatted text, these are stored in Normal.dot)

Word first uses a default list of entries and once you add an entry then a <UserName>.acl file is created. This file is placed in the Windows folder, so one possibility is that you don't have the necessary permissions for the Windows folder.

The next possibility is that the Registry stores the *.acl path at:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonA utoCorrect

So if you are unable to modify this branch of the Registry then that would be another reason.

However I suspect the problem is the permissions in the Windows folder. From what you describe you are unable to even create the <UserName>.acl file since the entries immediately disappear.

Let us know what you find. If it is a permissions problem with the Windows folder, and if you are able to edit the Registry then I can assist you with a workaround.

Thank you BAM, I think you are leading me in the right direction, but!

A search for *.acl revealed nine ACL files in Cocuments and SettingsnoelApplication DataMicrosoftOffice with names such as MSO1031, 32, 51, 52 etc. A further six with the same location except "noel" replaced by "Noel R Matthews" - I normally log on as "noel" but Windows did create a user called "Noel R Matthews" when I first installed it.

Then there are another three files called "MSO.ACL" in E:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice1036, 1033 and 1034.

There is only one with a date in August 2001 - and looking at it with Quick View reveals only four entries.

The Registry key you quote does not include an AutoCorrect entry at all. The only entries including AutoCorrect are two keys with long strings of numbers as their CSID.

Yes I am happy to edit the Registry so your advice would be most welcome.

And also - may I delete all the ACL files which appear to be redundant?

Thank you and I look forward to your response.

Thank you Egghead, as I answered BAM, there is no registry entry for AutoCorrect for Word at all in my computer, so I guess that is the problem or at least part of the problem.

By the way I forgot to tell BAM that as user "noel" I have Administrator priveleges and I did also check the priveleges for the ACL files and they gave administrators Full Access.

All advice will be most welcome.

    Hi Noel,

The MSO.acl files underOffice1036, 1033 and 1034 are for the multi-language support. By default, Word 2000 supports English (1033), French (1036), and Spanish (1034).

I wonder if Word switched languages on you at some point and your AutoCorrect entries were added to a different language file. Note that this switch also applies to the language assigned to the text for proofing.

My recommendation here is if you do not need the additional language support, first go to Start/Programs/Office Tools/Microsoft Office Language Settings. On the Enabled Languages tab, clear the check boxes next to the languages that you do not want.

Occasionally I find just this isn't enough with install on demand capabilities. I also go to the Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs and in Microsoft Office, set the "do not install" option on the various languages.

The Registry entry I was referring to would have included a pointer to the active AutoCorrect file using a text command path. So if isn't to be found then I'm not certain of the change that would need to be made.

However if you do choose in uninstall the additional language support, your AutoCorrect problem will be resolved.

Thank you very much BAM, you are correct - but! I did not have language support turned on in the Microsoft Office Language Settings - only language turned on was English. But Spanish and French were activated in Word - I have now disabled both in Control Panel.

Actually because I work for an international organisation I do fairly regularly receive messages in Spanish, French German and Japanese (Seems that if a person in Japan sends a message in English it is still identified as Japanese using special Japanese fonts) so no doubt Word has switched languages pretty often. So I will probably need to re-activate the languages once I get this sorted out.

I will watch Word for a day or so and see what happens. I will let you know.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Noel
