    Automatic Date in Word 2007 (Word 2007)

    We are in the process of converting numerous people to Office 2007. We've discovered that the auto date feature, auto completion of the current date does not work, even when we follow the directions found in the Word Help exactly. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do to correct the problem. This is not one PC with a problem, but all installations. The work around is to create a macro to insert the current date, but that not a REAL solution. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks much, Judy Crawford

    Try this:
    - Activate the Visual Basic Editor.
    - Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
    - Type the line

    Application.DisplayAutoCompleteTips = True

    - With the insertion point in that line, press Enter.
    - Switch back to Word to test whether Word suggests the date when you type Sept.

    Insert Date, complete with a nonstandard format, works very well for me. Just go to Insert, Date and Time, select the format of your choice, and check or leave unchecked the Update Automatically box.

    There is an even more interesting feature, called Date Picker, that will allow you to insert any date you choose from a calendar, and it will insert it in your default format. (I posted a question some time ago now to ask about such a thing, and no one had an answer, which I just discovered myself yesterday.)

    Both of these features can conveniently be added to the Quick Access Toolbar. Under Customize select More Commands, then bypass Popular Commands and select All Commands to find them listed at Date. Add either or both to your Quick Access toolbar, and you'll have the date in the blink of an eye.

    Thanks Hans, this worked great.. The only pain about this is that I have to visit all the PC's that have this problem either by remote logon or in person to effect the change and that is a problem. Any ideas why it wouldn't have been set right on install?

    Thanks Peter, and this would work great, but both require the removal of your hands from the keyboard and for a "real" typist--not me!. That slows them down terribly. It that that insert date is a problem, it is that auto date as you type doesn't work. I'll try your solution on my PC. Hans solution works so will do that to all these PC's, but sure can't understand why a feature thats supposed to work doesn't without intervention--a Microsoft issue I'm sure.

    Sorry, no idea.

    Are the PCs on a network? If so, you may be able to use a system policy or a login script to change the setting. (Others will have to help you with the details, though, I have no eperience with that kind of thing).

    This thread has an example of how to toggle a Word setting using VBScript to automate Word. Users could run this voluntarily, if they want the improved functionality, or it could be run at startup. You would need to modify it to use the line of code in Hans' post. Please report back on whether it works.

    need a registry key Tools, Options, View (2002 SP3) (March 2007)
