Canít Connect to www.wopr.com (IE 7)

    Iím have a problem opening

    http://www.wopr.com

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I tried the Refresh button, checked the spelling and tried it from a link without success

Unable to open http://www.wopr.com Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server

When I try opening link in ForFire I get The connection has timed out message

Network Diagnostics for Windows XP checked out OK

Internet Options Security Internet shows all enabled or prompt
Internet Options Security Restricted Sites looks OK

This seems to be the only internet address that dosenít work.

I have 2 other computers that use the same wireless router and DSL modem and they connect OK to http://www.wopr.com

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, John

Did you add the IP address of the old Lounge server to the Hosts file on the problem PC? We've moved to a new server after the crash of early last month, so the old IP address isn't valid any more.

The Hosts file is a plain text file (without extension) in C:WindowsSystem32DriversEtc. You can edit it with Notepad.
Look for lines starting with www.wopr.com or wopr.com. If they are present, remove them, then close and save the file.
    Changes will be effective instantaneously.

I would have never figured that out. The last modified date was 1/7/7. I donít recall adding anthing to this file.

After further review the other 2 computers did not have the 2 offending lines.

    Good detective work!

    Thanks, John

Re: Canít Connect to www.wopr.com (IE 7)

    Hi Hans,
Reading about your reply, reminded me to ask a question about the Hosts file. Viewing it, I've discovered that Search and Destroy has added hundreds of websites to it, they all have the .com or .org extension. I'm using the free edition.

Is this normal or should I remove that terribly long list? It upset me so when I saw the list that I'm considering removing S&D completly

One more question, I'm not receiving emails from Woody's anymore, should I sign-up again or is something wrong on Woody's?

The websites added by Spybot Search & Destroy are all "baddies". By redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 they are all effectively disabled (127.0.0.1 is your own computer). I would leave them in the Hosts file.

If you still decide you don't want this, you can simply delete the list from the Hosts file. There is no need to uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy for this purpose.

The e-mail notification and digest service hasn't been working correctly since we moved to a new server last month. We hope to fix this problem eventually, but for the moment you'll have to do without the e-mails.

Re: Canít Connect to www.wopr.com (IE 7)

Thanks Hans for your swift reply. There must be at least 500 or more sites listed, should I delete them one by one. If I remove them won't S&D put them back again?

As for the digest service, I just visit Woody's and click on the topics I was getting emails about and read the new ones there. A trifle inconvient but any port will do in a storm, right?

Once again, there is no need to remove the entries unless you have explicit proof that it causes problems. Just removing them "because there are so many of them" is not a good reason.

If you still want to remove them, you can click 'Remove Spybot S&D hosts list' in Tools | Hosts File. Or click the first entry then scroll down and click the last entry, then click 'Remove selected entries'.

I bow to your superior judgement and leave them alone.
