turn off automatic email (outlook 2003 and vista windows mail)

For some reason I am getting my email now into Both Vista mail and into outlook.
Is there a way of turning off automatic download of mail into outlook and just have it go to vista windows mail without removing the email accounts in outlook 2004

    If you don't start Outlook you shouldn't have a problem <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

But seriously, are you leaving a copy of e-mail messages on the server? If so, the same message will be downloaded to both Windows Mail and to Outlook. To turn this off:
    - Activate the Mail control panel (or whatever it's called in Vista)
    - Click E-mail Accounts.
    - Select 'View or change existing e-mail accounts', then click Next.
    - Select an e-mail account, then click Change (or Properties).
    - Click More Settings.
    - Activate the Advanced tab.
    - Clear the check box 'Leave a copy of messages on the server'.
    - OK your way out.

    Hi Hans
Thanks, but I like to leave the messages on the server for a few days just in case of a computer crash (i have lived through one)
There is not a way to stop outlook from checking mail??? In the past you were asked which is the default email client and one said OE and all was fine. Now it seems both are default email clients

In Outlook, select Tools | Options...
    Activate the Mail Setup tab.
    Click Send/Receive...
In the section "When Outlook is Offline", clear the check box "Schedule an automatic send/receive every ... minutes"
You can also turn off the corresponding check box under "When Outlook is Online", if you wish, and even clear the check boxes "Include this group in Send/Receive".
If you have more than one group defined, do the above for all groups.

Hi Hans thanks so very much this helped a lot, Tried to find these settings through outlook help and just by trial and error without any success prior to you outlining how to do it.
    Thanks again
