    Excel '65535' bug (2007)

There is a bug in Excel 2007 whereby if you have a formula whose result should be 65535 you may get the wrong answer. For example in Excel 2007 the result for the formula "=850*77.1" is 100,000

For more info on this bug see Google groups - Bug in Excel 2007

    Yeah, isn't it great!
Excel 2007 has excellent new stuff, but it IS a "zero" build to me.

Note the subsequent blog responses pointing out that rounding and certain numberformats will make this problem more than a 'display' issue.

What is even more curious that if you use the limited maths functions in a table in Word 2007 you get the right answer!

Word no doubt uses a different calculation "engine" than Excel, so it won't suffer from the same errors.

    Re: Excel '65535' bug (2007)

It dawned on me that 65,535 is 2**16, and the 100000 that is displayed in Octal (does anyone even remember that) is 2**16. Is there a connection?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

The fact that 65,535 = 2**16 - 1 is no doubt relevant, but we don't know in what way exactly...
