Typing to replace selection (2003 SP2)

I am reasonable sure that in older versions, typing to replace a selected word replaced the whole word at once so, if you wanted to used F4 to repeat edit it was a case of just selecting the required word then hit F4 to replace the word. In Word 2003 on my own computer and my office computer using F4 replaces selected text with all but the first letter. It's as though typing the first letter deletes selected text and then the rest of the word is remembered.

    Is there a solution?

    Cheers, Geoff

This behavior was introduced in one of the updates to Word 2003. You are correct that Word now sees typing over a selected word as two separate actions. You can verify this by looking at the Undo list - click the little dropdown arrow to the right of the Undo button on the toolbar. Unfortunately there is no solution for it.

(See the newsgroup thread Redo operation with key F4)

    Thanks Hans

Yet another useless—no, retrograde—'enhancement' from Mickysoft. Thanks Bill.

    Cheers
