Data Labels on bar chart (2003 )

I'm attaching the file so you can see what I'm talking about. One of our users created text boxes on her charts to show the series value for each bar. The axis shows the values in %. She said her co-worker was able to get the series values to show on each bar, rotated on the bar. But, the co-worker doesn't remember how she did it, and she doesn't have an electronic copy of the file for me to look at.

I downloaded an add-in to accomplish this, but the user was told she is not allowed to use add-ins. She said the coworker who got this to work once told her it is possible to do this just using Excel 2003. I'm stumped.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would take a look at the attached file and tell me how to get the data labels on each bar to show with the number values and the words just (like she has in the text boxes above the bars). For instance, the first bar for January would have "5731 Total Calls" on it.

    Thank you for any suggestions.

Does the upper chart in the attached version do what you want?

I added a dummy data series with values 1 (100%).
I added this series to the chart, and specified that it should use a secondary axis.
I specified that the secondary value axis should have a maximum of 1, then hid it by setting it to have no pattern or markers.
I set the X values for the dummy series to F11:F19, causing the chart to use a secondary category axis.
This caused the new series to cover the original series.
I made the series transparent by setting line and fill to none.
I specified data labels to use the category values, and changed the alignment to vertical.

    PS The current month is named October. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Oh, I forgot one detail: I set the number format for the data labels of the dummy series to the custom format

    0 "Total Calls"

to include the text "Total Calls" in the labels.

Yes, that is perfect! Now I'm going to try to do that on my own for the 2nd chart to see if I really understand what you did. Thank you so much!!

I'm trying to follow your directions, and I got stuck pretty quickly. I added the new series to the chart. But how do you specify that it should use a secondary axis?

Well, I am now really stuck. I got most of it, but I can't seem to get the values to show. I followed your instructions, and compared charts, but i don't see what I missed. Would you please take a look at the 2nd chart and tell me what I missed.

Ok I got it. I had the data labels set to the category value, but it worked if I set them to the category name.

    Thank you!!!!
